Does my puppy need all her vaccinations if she's getting spayed?

The core vaccines are Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella. She will need boosters for the Distemper and possibly the Bordetella (depends on the vaccine formula). Depending on local disease prevalence, Leptospirosis and Lyme vaccines may also be recommended (these will also need boosters). She could have been spayed anytime after 6 months of age. The more heat cycles she goes through, the greater risk she has of developing mammary gland tumors later in life. As she gets older, the risk of uterine infection (pyometra) will also increase. The rabies vaccine should have been administered at between 12-16 weeks of age. She should have received a booster at 1 year of age. After that one, she can get a rabies vaccine every 3 years. The "5 way vaccine", does not include rabies. This vaccine can be given yearly or every 3 years depending on which company makes it.

Hi there! She will need to have a check-up with your veterinarian and her first set of vaccines as soon as you get her. After that, it's fine for her to be around healthy vaccinated dogs, sign up for puppy kindergarten classes, etc. - but I would not take her dog parks or other high-traffic areas with lots of unknown dogs until she is completely finished with her vaccine series at 16+ weeks of age. Some umblical hernias are harmless and don't need to be fixed, while others do. Your veterinarian should be able to determine this at the time of her exam. If the hernia does need to be repaired, this can usually be done at the same time as her spay to avoid having to have two separate anesthetic procedures. Dogs are typically spayed at around 4-6 months of age. This can often be scheduled in conjunction with the pup's last set of vaccines, if you wish. Cost for a spay and hernia repair will vary widely depending on where you live and which specific vet clinic you go to, so I would suggest calling around to some local clinics in your area for prices if this is a concern.

She is a pretty girl!!! The most important vaccination (and one required by law) is the Rabies vaccine. This is essential. The second most important vaccine is the Distemper vaccine, which is often a combo vaccine sometimes called a DHPP (protects against distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza). These vaccines are considered the "core vaccines" for dogs. Every dog should have them. The rest will depend on her lifestyle. I also recommend the Leptosporosis vaccine for dogs if they spend time outdoors in areas with creeks/puddles/ponds because this disease is a bacteria transmitted to dogs by contaminated water (rodents who have the disease urinate and it contaminates the water and the dogs can acquire it this way). The Lepto vaccine requries a series of 2 booster 3 to 4 weeks apart if she has never had it before. Other vaccines you may consider would include Lyme if your dog is outdoors and exposed to ticks and you are in a lyme endemic area, Bordetella also known as Kennel Cough if you ever take her to the park/groomer/kennel/dog classes/out for walks in areas with other dogs. Canine Influenza is another vaccine I recommend for dogs that come into contact with many other dogs/areas with many other dogs such as kennels or dog shows/events. That vaccine will also require a series of 2 vaccines several weeks apart if she has never had it before.

They should be vaccinated every 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age, then a booster 1 year later. Spay is usually recommended at around 6 months of age but this can be variable based on the breed.
