My unvaccinated dog is getting spayed. What shots does she need?

Some vaccines depend on where you live but the core vaccines are as follows: Distemper/adenovirus/parvo/parainfluenza- this is a combination vaccine given in a series 3-4 weeks apart Rabies- the age given depends on your area but usually at 16 weeks of age The optional vaccines are: Leptospirosis- 2 given 3-4 weeks apart Lyme- 2 given 3-4 weeks apart Bordetella- may or may not be given twice Flu- given 2-3 weeks apart. I recommend contacting a vet to set up an initial appointment. They can go over these in more detail and tailor them to Gnocchi’s lifestyle. They will also talk to you about intestinal parasite screening and heartworm and flea prevention. They can then discuss the spay procedure and get Gnocchi scheduled. Good luck and kisses to Gnocchi!

There are a variety of vaccines that are considered core vaccines (and some others that may be necessary depending on where you live and if Haley will be spending time at a boarding kennel or around other dogs). Core vaccines include the Rabies vaccine and Distemper/parvovirus vaccines. Depending on where you live Haley may also need a Lepto vaccine or Lyme vaccine. Finally, if she will be around other dogs frequently (like at a boarding kennel or groomers) she may need her Bordetella and Influenza vaccine. The best thing to do would be to have Haley checked out by a veterinarian. That way they can discuss the risk factors in your area and recommend the appropriate vaccines. You puppy should get all of her vaccines even if you choose not to spay her. Most puppies get a series of 3-4 combo vaccines, and then a rabies vaccine, that are then updated annually or every three years by the type.

She is a pretty girl!!! The most important vaccination (and one required by law) is the Rabies vaccine. This is essential. The second most important vaccine is the Distemper vaccine, which is often a combo vaccine sometimes called a DHPP (protects against distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza). These vaccines are considered the "core vaccines" for dogs. Every dog should have them. The rest will depend on her lifestyle. I also recommend the Leptosporosis vaccine for dogs if they spend time outdoors in areas with creeks/puddles/ponds because this disease is a bacteria transmitted to dogs by contaminated water (rodents who have the disease urinate and it contaminates the water and the dogs can acquire it this way). The Lepto vaccine requries a series of 2 booster 3 to 4 weeks apart if she has never had it before. Other vaccines you may consider would include Lyme if your dog is outdoors and exposed to ticks and you are in a lyme endemic area, Bordetella also known as Kennel Cough if you ever take her to the park/groomer/kennel/dog classes/out for walks in areas with other dogs. Canine Influenza is another vaccine I recommend for dogs that come into contact with many other dogs/areas with many other dogs such as kennels or dog shows/events. That vaccine will also require a series of 2 vaccines several weeks apart if she has never had it before.

Hello and congratulations on adding Lilly to your family! Your core vaccines at this age need to be Distemper/Parvo and a Bordetella. She is older enough to start Leptospirosis and Lyme disease if these are indicated based upon where you live. Ask the vet if she would recommend these vaccines. Lilly will need another set of boosters in 3 weeks and she will be old enough to get her Rabies vaccine at that age. You may also discussed separating some of these vaccines so Lilly is not receiving 4-5 at one time. Hope this helps!

Parker is cute! Most dogs get a vaccine core of Rabies, Distemper/Parvo and Bordetella. Depending on where you live, Leptospirosis and Lyme vaccines may also be indicated as well as Heartworm prevention. I would recommend to have the records from your old vet faxed over to your new vet and to discuss what is needed based on your location. I also see that Parker is marked as unspayed. Spaying female dogs has significant health benefits as she gets older. I would also recommend to discuss this with the doctor if you are not planning on breeding Parker. Take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Blueberry. Most veterinarians will vaccinate early if it closer to the due dates as long as the patient is healthy. So if she has fully recovered from her spay, it should be fine to vaccinate her at that time. I hope this information helps!
