What vaccines does my 4-month-old puppy need before getting spayed?

The core vaccines are Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella. She will need boosters for the Distemper and possibly the Bordetella (depends on the vaccine formula). Depending on local disease prevalence, Leptospirosis and Lyme vaccines may also be recommended (these will also need boosters). Hello and congratulations on adding Lilly to your family! Your core vaccines at this age need to be Distemper/Parvo and a Bordetella. She is older enough to start Leptospirosis and Lyme disease if these are indicated based upon where you live. Ask the vet if she would recommend these vaccines. Lilly will need another set of boosters in 3 weeks and she will be old enough to get her Rabies vaccine at that age. You puppy should get all of her vaccines even if you choose not to spay her. Most puppies get a series of 3-4 combo vaccines, and then a rabies vaccine, that are then updated annually or every three years by the type.

Hi there! Great question and good for you trying to be prepared. Puppies should start their vaccine protocol as soon as they leave Mom, which is usually about 8 weeks old. They should be vaccinated every 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age, then a booster 1 year later. Spay is usually recommended at around 6 months of age but this can be variable based on the breed. Congratulations on adding Coco to your family! Coco's basic vaccines will be distemper/parvo, rabies and bordetella. Depending on where you live Leptospirosis and Lyme vaccines may also be indicated. Coco will need 3-4 rounds of vaccines depending on her age when the series is started. The series will end when Coco is 16-18 weeks of age. First, have her examined by your veterinarian. He or she can administer or dispense a dewormer. It will likely need to be repeated in 2 and 4 weeks. Afterwards, start her on a monthly preventative for heartworm and intestinal parasites. A topical or oral flea and tick preventative can also be started. Discuss with the vet what Cherry's lifestyle will be. This will determine which vaccines she will get. Core vaccines include distemper/parvo combination and Rabies vaccines. She will need 3-4 distemper/parvo vaccine every 4 weeks. The rabies vaccine she can get now. It will be repeated next year, then every 3 years. Lifestyle vaccines include Lyme disease, leptospirosis, canine flu and bordatella (kennel cough). These are given based on her risk of exposure. You can discuss their use with your veterinarian. She can be spayed at about 6 months of age.
