Why does my dog's urine look and smell strange? Is it normal?

She could have crystals present. This occurs when the urine pH is too high or too low. Crystals can predispose a dog to bladder stones. There is a large variation in normal urine color, so we can't use that as a gauge to determine if anything medical is going on. We need to examine the urine microscopically to determine if there are any white blood cells, red blood cells, crystals or bacteria that may be abnormal in the urine. Unfortunately, we can't tell that by just looking at the urine. I would have your dog checked for a urinary tract infection. These types of infection can cause a change in the color and consistency of the urine. It is normal for male, intact dogs to have some discharge from the prepuce but if the urine itself is abnormal he needs to be evaluated by your vet and have his urine checked.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Sometimes more concentrated urine can have a stronger odor. I would make sure he is drinking plenty of water and not dehydrating himself. If he has been drinking adequate amounts of water and if the smell continues, I would get him examined by his veterinarian and have his urine tested as he may be dealing with a urinary tract infection.
