Why does my dog pee inside every morning? Behavior or medical?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 6 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

My dog has been having a accident every morning about 4 am for about a week she jumps off the bed Goes to living room pees comes back to bed could this be a behavioral issue she’s 6 years old and been potty trained since she was a year old or could this is something I need to take her to the vet for? thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kiwi. I recommend that she see her veterinarian ti ensure that she does not have a medical problem. A urine sample will be tested to look for evidence of an infection, bladder stones or even diabetes. If she does not seem to have a medical issue, behavioral modifications can be made. Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I really can't tell from one single urination if Kiwi is urinating a normal amount, since the total urine output in a 24 hour period is what matters. However, if your perception is she's urinating more, then this always warrants evaluation by a vet, since conditions that lead to increased urine production can include diabetes, kidney disease, Cushings disease, etc. Your vet will want to look at a urine sample, and likely a blood sample, to determine why Kiwi's urinary habits have changed.

I would recommend bringing Kiwi to your veterinarian and have them evaluate her urine sample. I would be concerned about a potential urinary tract infection if she is starting to urinate inside now.

I would recommend to rule out something like an infection in Presley's bladder before you give up on her. Since she can't talk, you don't know the reasoning behind this behavior. The veterinarian will look at her urine sample to see if there are any abnormalities which may cause this behavior. Go from there. If it does look to be more behavioral, speak with a trainer, read some books about housebreaking difficult dogs. Most dogs can be properly housebroken but not all learn in the same fashion. Why does my dog pee on the floor early morning without waking me?

I'm sorry you're dealing with this frustrating issue. If needing an early morning bathroom break is a change, I'd recommend starting with a vet visit to make sure she doesn't have a UTI, bladder stone, skin infection, or even organ function problem etc. Those issues all can all increasing the amount of water she's drinking, making her need to go out in the middle of the night. If there is no medical issue, then it's a house training problem, which is difficult at her age. Usually using a crate to re-house train as if she were a puppy is the most effective course of treatment to deal with this.

Hello Diane. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You didn't mention if this was a new problem or a lifelong problem. Has she ever been completely housebroken? If this is a relatively new problem, Nikki may have an underlying medical condition - like a urinary tract infection. I suggest you have her examined by your vet and have a urine test done to check for infection or other underlying medical problem. If you can rule out a medical problem then you can assume it is behavioral, in which case, you should consult with a professional, in-home dog trainer. It is very hard to potty train a dog this age without professional help.

It's possible that while Kiwi is going more frequently, the volume has not increased. In either case, this is a concerning symptom that should be checked out by your vet. Possible issues such as metabolic illnesses, urinary tract infections, etc can all cause an increase in urination and accidents so having a thorough exam done is best.

Why is my house-trained dog suddenly peeing inside the house?

Poor Riley (and you!)! Riley could be urinating in the house because of a medical issue, such as a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Behavioral stressors, such as a change in her normal routine, can trigger inappropriate urination in some pets. As a first step, Riley should be seen by her vet and have a urinalysis performed to check for the presence of infection and crystals. A urinary tract infection requires antibiotics and crystals may require a diet change. If medical issues are ruled out, consider using a calming pheromone diffuser or collar (Adaptil is one example).
