My dog had a UTI and died. Can a urinary tract infection kill a dog?

I'm very sorry for your loss. With the lab changes you described, sepsis and cancer certainly were possibilities. A UTI would have to be quite severe to cause sepsis. If you were accustomed to monitoring for signs of a UTI, I highly doubt that you would miss one severe enough to cause sepsis. Again, I'm sorry for your loss and hope this helps you to find some closure.

I am sorry for your loss but given the care you had given and the experience you had in spitting the utis it is unlikely you missed the early warning signs and more likely ge developed a rapidly progressing, severe crisis, possibly complicated by a tumor or addisons

I am sorry to hear about Jack. A urinary tract infection would not cause an enlargement of the spleen, heart, or liver. It would not affect the hips or spine either. The dilute urine could be related to the urinary tract infection. I would recommend an ultrasound of the abdomen and the heart to further evaluate these enlarged organs.

Without seeing the blood work, I wouldn't be able to say if it is renal failure or not. If the BUN and Creatinine are elevated extensively and especially if the phosphorus is elevated then unfortunately Angel is most likely in renal failure. A urinary tract infection should not cause elevations in those values unless there is also a secondary kidney infection going on and she is in kidney failure due to that. I would recommend either requesting a consultation or resubmitting a question with the blood work attached. I am so sorry Angel isn't feeling well. If the urinary infection became sepsis (whole body wide infection) and infected the joint or bones. However this would be very rare, but I suppose possible. Especially if the patient had a compromised immune system to begin with. I have never seen a case where I suspected this scenario in over 20 years in the veterinary field.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. I am not sure how old she was, but losing a pet no matter how old or young is still hard to cope with. Over time it does get a little easier to cope with this lose and you should always cherish the good moments you had with your pet. As a side, you do have the option of getting any pet a necropsy (examination of the body rigth after they pass) to hopefully determine the cause of death. It is impossible to know for sure what caused her demise based on the symptoms you described but it is possible she may have had a stroke, an underlying heart condition or cancer. Poor girl. This is concerning that she not only has a UTI but that the bacteria has now entered her bloodstream (sepsis) and is making her ill. Yes your vet will have to see her to get her urine tested first and then prescribe antibiotics to hopefully get her feeling better soon. You cannot get antibiotics prescirbed for your pet without first completing a physical exam. Other possible causes for this include: diabetes, cushing's disease aor even cancer unfortunately.
