Did my dog's recurring UTI cause his sudden, unexpected death?

dog got recurring utis. He had infection in Jan. He was on Clavamox 2 wKS then zeniquin 4 wks. He seemed to bounce back. 3 weeks later he died. Could that first infection not have cleared up? When he seemed OK they did not do more blood work. We had to rush him to ER, heart rate-250, hypoglycemic, high rbc,wbc,postassium,bun/urea,glob,phos,hct,hgb,lymps,monos,neut,retics..own eos,hc03,ph,tc02.vet said septic,bacteria infection. Another vet said cancer or environmental bacteria. Did I miss a UTi

I'm very sorry for your loss. With the lab changes you described, sepsis and cancer certainly were possibilities. A UTI would have to be quite severe to cause sepsis. If you were accustomed to monitoring for signs of a UTI, I highly doubt that you would miss one severe enough to cause sepsis. Again, I'm sorry for your loss and hope this helps you to find some closure.

Hi! I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. It sure sounds like she got good control of her UTIs with her antibiotics, so it is unlikely that she would have died from bacterial infection stemming from her bladder. But, it is hard to know for sure. Generally if there is an ongoing bladder infection, the pet will continue showing signs of painful urination, bloody urine etc.
It could well have been Addison's, as this can cause low blood sugar and high potassium, and can definitely cause sudden death. Hope this helps!

Yes, you should take her back to the vet for a follow-up. She should have an xray to check to see if she has bladder stones. Bladder stones irritate the lining of the bladder which can cause bleeding. If it was a simple UTI I would have expected it to be resolved by now.

I am so sorry you lost JenJen. That is always traumatic! Unfortunately it is not possible to tell you why your dog died without a post mortem. There is a possibility that JenJen had kidney failure due to the UTI and that can cause death, however this is speculation without having any further history. I suggest you have JenJen sent to a pathology lab to find out why he died. I am wondering why JenJen was in hospital with a UTI. This does signify that he must have been very ill. Discuss having a post mortem done with your vet. This will hopefully show up the cause of death. Again I feel for you having lost JenJen. I am so sorry.

Can an untreated dog UTI cause my dog to limp or have leg pain?

If the urinary infection became sepsis (whole body wide infection) and infected the joint or bones. However this would be very rare, but I suppose possible. Especially if the patient had a compromised immune system to begin with. I have never seen a case where I suspected this scenario in over 20 years in the veterinary field.

My dog died suddenly after being sick. What could be the cause?

I'm very sorry for the sudden loss of your dog. With his history I would be suspicious of an infection, heart disease, sudden bleeding or a toxin that could cause death. While Lyme disease can be serious his signs aren't specific for a Lyme infection. For a specific answer tissue and/or body fluid samples as well as a post mortem exam like an autopsy would be needed. However even with those we sometimes cannot pinpoint the exact cause of a sudden death.

My dog has a UTI. Why is she bleeding after starting antibiotics?

Frequent licking and blood in the urine are signs of an infection. However if it flared after the start of the antibiotics then I would pursue further testing. Did they do anytime sample tonxhexk for cells and crystals and see what bacteria what present? From there you need an X-ray or an ultrasound to make sure there are no bladder stones as this can require surgery or the problem will keep occurring without.

Can a UTI cause enlarged organs, bad spine, and dilute urine in dogs?

I am sorry to hear about Jack. A urinary tract infection would not cause an enlargement of the spleen, heart, or liver. It would not affect the hips or spine either. The dilute urine could be related to the urinary tract infection. I would recommend an ultrasound of the abdomen and the heart to further evaluate these enlarged organs.

My dog won't eat, pees frequently, and seems depressed. Is it a UTI?

Poor girl. This is concerning that she not only has a UTI but that the bacteria has now entered her bloodstream (sepsis) and is making her ill. Yes your vet will have to see her to get her urine tested first and then prescribe antibiotics to hopefully get her feeling better soon. You cannot get antibiotics prescirbed for your pet without first completing a physical exam. Other possible causes for this include: diabetes, cushing's disease aor even cancer unfortunately. It is best to get Marley checked out right away. I do hope that Marley starts to feel better soon! Best of luck and take care.
