My 37lb dog got underdosed with dewormer. Is he okay, what to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 37 lbs

i gave my beagle the 8 in 1 dewormer but it was for a 20 lb dog he weighs 37 lbs.

I am sorry I misread your question during my initial answer. If your pet received less than the dosage needed, then you would simply need to redose him another equal dose for a 20 lb dog and he will then get his accurate amount of dewormer. Typically dewormers are dosed in mg's, so if you look at the mg dosage for the weight range he should have had, it should be close to double the mg dosage for a 20 lb dog. I hope this helps! I would suggest monitoring him for upset stomach symptoms, which is the typical result of getting an overdose of dewormer medication. Typically dewormers are tolerated well when given in excess and don't cause any major toxicity concerns in dogs. You can also offer Morty a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle his stomach if needed. By the off chance he doesn't seem to recover after 24 hrs then it's best to visit your vet for further care. I hope everything turns out well for Morty. Best wishes and take care.

Puppy overdosed on dewormer, now very sleepy. Is this serious?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In the US we do not use Albendazole in dogs or cats. If Oscar only weighs 5.5 lbs and if he was given 5mls that is 200mg of albendazole and at that dose it has been reported to cause mental dullness and decreased appetite in cats. It can also affect white and red blood cells. I don't have much information about overdoses in dogs. Stop giving him the medication. The dose of ivermectin should be ok. If he gets worse or doesn't improve he should be taken to an emergency hospital. Good luck!

Hi, it is fine to give the two tablets together as a single dose. The dose is accurate for a 20 kg dog, how often your repeat it will depend on how frequently he comes in contact with parasites. If there are lots of worms in the environment, he could be wormed every 3 months but I would double check with your vet. Hope this helps !

Dog puked after dewormer. Is it still effective or needs redosing?

If your dog vomited more than an hour after the medication was given it is probably OK and in his system. However, if the dog vomited before an hour had passed then you will need to redose your dog with another round of dewormer. This medication is very safe and redosing should not cause a problem. Hello, sorry to hear about Zoey. It truly depends on the dose your dog got. If the weights are similar then Zoey may not experience any side effects. If the weights are different, then it truly does depend on what dose in mg/kg Zoey ingested. If you think this dose is high then you could expect to see vomiting, diarrhea and a decreased appetite. My dog threw up after roundworm medicine. Should I redose him?

Poor guy. If he vomited within 1 hr of giving the medication, he likely vomited it back up. However, if you are still unsure and didn't see the pill within the vomit, it is best to wait at least 3 days, give a second dose, then wait 2 weeks and give a 3rd dose just to make sure he gets the medication.
