My 6-week puppy with tapeworms got too much dewormer. Is she okay?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Generally speaking the active ingredients in most of these dewormers for dogs have a very wide margin of safety so giving another dose by accident is not likely to cause any significant issues.

Wormers are generally considered very safe medications and although some vomiting or diarrhea may develop this should resolve uneventfully. Some types can cause tremors and neurological signs and you should contact an emergency vet and inform them of the brand, timing and dosage if you notice any unusual symptoms

Praziquantel is typically given as a single dose. It may need to be repeated in 2 weeks. According to package information, one 34mg tablet is the dose given to dogs between 6 and 10 pounds. You will need to confirm this with your veterinarian though. Legally, we are prohibited from telling you to administer any medication to your pet in the absence of a physical exam.

Drontal is a very safe deworming tablet, so I would give Tofy one table. Doses of up to 10 times the recommended dose will usually only cause some nausea, so giving her a little bit extra will not likely result in any harm. I hope this helps!

I am sorry I misread your question during my initial answer. If your pet received less than the dosage needed, then you would simply need to redose him another equal dose for a 20 lb dog and he will then get his accurate amount of dewormer. Typically dewormers are dosed in mg's, so if you look at the mg dosage for the weight range he should have had, it should be close to double the mg dosage for a 20 lb dog. I hope this helps! If this happend within the past 2 hours you should take your puppy to a Pet ER where they can make your puppy regurgitate its stomach contents. This is a significant overdose and can hurt your puppy.| At this age puppies do not have tape worm yet, so there is no need to give a tape worm wormer. It is more important to give a wormer for round worms. Take Lucy to the Pet ER now so she can get rid of the Derramax overdose before her liver and/kidneys are damaged.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In the US we do not use Albendazole in dogs or cats. If Oscar only weighs 5.5 lbs and if he was given 5mls that is 200mg of albendazole and at that dose it has been reported to cause mental dullness and decreased appetite in cats. It can also affect white and red blood cells. I don't have much information about overdoses in dogs. Stop giving him the medication. The dose of ivermectin should be ok. If he gets worse or doesn't improve he should be taken to an emergency hospital. Good luck!
