Why is my dog twitching after topical flea and tick medicine?

Poor guy. It sounds like he may be having muscle spasms from the flea prevention, since this is a common side effect seen. I would recommend washing him again to remove the product and then visiting your vet to have him treated for his muscle spasms. A muscle relaxer likely will be recommended as well as any other supportive care meds he needs. If you’re noticing increased itching in that area and you found a flea, you may try switching the flea prevention to see if that helps. Fleas can become immune to products. The top products on the market are oral products such as Nexgard and Simparica. Most pets can use these products but you should talk with your veterinarian before switching. They are administered once a month and at this point appear to work very well. If the itching goes away, then you know it was related to flea bites. Best of luck.

It's possible that the product is burning or that he can smell/feel the product on his skin. I don't recommend to re-apply the product and I suspect the application is not the problem. You may try using a hair brush and brushing the area of application. Do check the skin to make sure it's not red/scabbig. This will generally stop within 24 hours. Moving forward, I recommend to speak with your vet about an oral flea product like Simparica. I hope this helps.

Often, these medications can cause tremors and trembling as a side effect or even when toxic doses are administered. Discontinue the medication, if he improves then he was likely having a side effect, but if his sigs continue or if they get worse (seizures, non-stop shaking and trembling, excessive salivation) then have him seen immediately. Other potential causes may not be associated with the medication and may be a sign of flea allergy dermatitis (allergy to the flea saliva) especially if you have seen fleas on him. Bathing him with cool water and a mild shampoo or dish soap can help to remove any excess chemicals of his coat and may provide some relief. In cases of broken skin I would recommend oral preventive therapy such as simparica or bravecto if available in the future

Yes I would be concerned, as this can be a sign of flea treatment toxicity. I would put her into a bath immediately, and gently wash the treatment off with water water and Dawn dish soap. Continue to monitor her for signs of toxicity, including vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, hyper salivation, and depression. If you see any of those signs, take her into your vet immediately. I would make sure that the flea treatment you put on Annie was for cats and not for dogs, as it's very important to have a cat dose for cats because they are so sensitive to the flea medication. I would wait a few days before reapplying a flea treatment, and I would use a different brand than what you just used. I recommend using Advantage or Revolution.

There could be something else causing this weird reaction besides fleas. I would try a different flea preventative like advantage or comfortis (oral) to see if this makes a difference (if you have this in your area).
