My dog is hiding in pain after tick treatment. What can I do?

However, this is concerning and warrants letting your veterinarian know as he may for example benefit from adding pain control medications added to his treatment protocol. Poor Simba! The twitching and irritability that he was showing you certainly sound like a reaction to this topical flea and tick medication. You did the right thing by bathing him to remove as much of the medication as possible. However, since he is still twitching and irritable, Simba should go to his vet for evaluation. There are muscle relaxers that can help with the twitching and steroids if an allergic or inflammatory reaction is diagnosed, both of which will likely make him far more comfortable. In the future, I typically recommend sticking with K9 Advantix II, Nexgard or Bravecto, but talk to your vet about their recommended products. I hope that all goes well!

I would recommend using a flea and tick preventative such as Frontline, Nexgard or Bravecto. He will likely need a shampoo to help soothe his skin after the ticks die. I would recommend Douxo PS Calm shampoo, which can be easily found online. I hope this helps and that Rusty improves! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns!

In this product they use Amitraz. I have seen dogs react poorly to this medication. Typically they have vomiting, diarrhea and lethargic behavior. I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian for supportive care. Typically this is not a fatal medication but can make them dehydrated and need medical care! Some dogs just like people are more sensitive to certain medications. I would not recommend using this product again. Hope that helps

If there are that many ticks in your environment, then a thorough cleaning of your environment is probably best as topical medications can only do so much. Scrubbing walls, baseboards, washing bedding and clearing and spraying brush and bushes around your home can help lower tick populations. Keeping Bruno in an area that is easy to clean can also help reduce the amount of ticks in his environment.

He needs a tick preventative such as Bravecto, Nexgard, or even Advantix over the counter can kill ticks quickly and prevent them for 30 days. Please get him on a tick preventative soon and visit your vet soon if you notice any symptoms of tick bite disease (i.e. anorexia, lethargy, fever or lameness). You should also avoid areas that he could be exposed to with high tick populations. Keep him out of the woods and consider getting your yard treated for. Ticks can transmit a variety of diseases that could cause these symptoms. I would recommend taking Maira to the vet to see if she has a tick-borne disease. The vet may recommend in-house testing for tick disease, sending out a tick panel to a lab, CBC, and/or blood chemistry to determine what exactly is going on to decide which treatments will be best for this particular case.
