Why is my dog acting strange after taking a flea and tick pill?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 16 lbs

I gave Tripp this flea and tick pill that is supposed to be given daily. Ever since he’s been taking the pill, 3-4 day, he’s been acting funny. He’s been acting like he doesn’t want to use the bathroom as in peeing. As far as defacating he used to let me know but he’ll just use it in the house now. He seems to be scratching more and getting out of breath which he’s never done. Also he acts like he has something caught on the side of mouth but it’s nothing. Kinda like he’s twitching in his mouth.

Hello, sorry to hear about Tripp. It sounds like he may be having a reaction to which ever flea medication you are administering. Often, these medications can cause tremors and trembling as a side effect or even when toxic doses are administered. Discontinue the medication, if he improves then he was likely having a side effect, but if his sigs continue or if they get worse (seizures, non-stop shaking and trembling, excessive salivation) then have him seen immediately.

Other potential causes may not be associated with the medication and may be a sign of flea allergy dermatitis (allergy to the flea saliva) especially if you have seen fleas on him. Since it is unclear wether his current flea medication is giving him side effects, then your veterinarian may consider using an alternative medication. Hope this helps and best of luck.

In this product they use Amitraz. I have seen dogs react poorly to this medication. Typically they have vomiting, diarrhea and lethargic behavior. I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian for supportive care. Typically this is not a fatal medication but can make them dehydrated and need medical care! Poor Simba! The twitching and irritability that he was showing you certainly sound like a reaction to this topical flea and tick medication. You did the right thing by bathing him to remove as much of the medication as possible. However, since he is still twitching and irritable, Simba should go to his vet for evaluation. There are muscle relaxers that can help with the twitching and steroids if an allergic or inflammatory reaction is diagnosed, both of which will likely make him far more comfortable. In the future, I typically recommend sticking with K9 Advantix II, Nexgard or Bravecto, but talk to your vet about their recommended products. I hope that all goes well!

My 6-month puppy is acting strange after flea drops. Is it a reaction?

Poor Sam. It’s possible he may have had a reaction to the medication. I recommend to wash him with dish soap to help remove some of the medication. I also recommend to have Sam examined by his veterinarian for some bloodwork to make sure there has not been any liver damage. If Sam cannot tolerate a collar or the topical preventive, talk with your veterinarian about starting him on an oral medication like Nexgard. Best of luck.

Why is my dog twitching and restless after recent flea treatment?

Poor guy. It sounds like he may be having muscle spasms from the flea prevention, since this is a common side effect seen. I would recommend washing him again to remove the product and then visiting your vet to have him treated for his muscle spasms. A muscle relaxer likely will be recommended as well as any other supportive care meds he needs. Why is my puppy sick and sleepy after flea and tick medicine?

He could be having an adverse reaction to the flea/tick medication. Give him a bath immediately! Then contact your local vet to have him examined and treated for an acute allergic reaction. The most important thing though is to wash off the product. Using dawn dish detergent works best to strip the product off. There is a chance that he has absorbed a good bit of the medication already, but this will help prevent further absorption and subsequent illness. Most adverse reactions to flea/tick products do well with time (minimum 12 hrs to see improvement). I hope your puppy Harley recovers soon!

My dog is shaking after flea shampoo. Is he having a reaction?

Hi there. Beau may indeed be having a reaction to the shampoo. I would definitely use another dog shampoo and wash that Hartz product off. If you have access to an open animal hospital at this time I would definitely bring him in to be seen. He is very tiny, and it may be that the flea shampoo ingredients were a bit much for him. The tremoring could also be because is chilly, but I just wouldn't take the chance. I definitely don't want to alarm you, but I would just take him in to see a vet.

It is unlikely that the 2 are related. He may have injured his leg or foot by jumping or playing. Typically if flea medications causes any systemic problems, the whole body is affected and he will shake all over, it will not be isolated to a single leg He may have a damage nail or pad or have a soft tissue injury. I would keep him rested, you can soak his foot in a warm water bath to help. If it continues then I would see a vet for medication and treatment
