My dog had a tooth pulled. Is bleeding and slobbering normal?

Hello. This is all VERY normal after a significant extraction of infected teeth. A little blood mixed in with saliva is causing the pink slime, & Maxi will hopefully learn to reposition her tongue, but many dogs without any more teeth will keep some of their tongue exposed. It seems like that tooth has to be extracted as it is full of tartar and probably very much exposed and unstable. I would recommend to have Peanut checked as soon as possible and have most appropriate procedure performed. It may be possible to extract it directly if the tooth it is very wobbly (probably with just local anesthetic). Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. He may experience mild bleeding from the gum and the gum may become swollen and sore for up to 24hrs. You can give him soft food for a day or two as picking up dry kibbles may cause some discomfort. In general, dogs tolerate losing teeth very well, so I do not think there is much to worry about.

This may be an indication of oral pain from the extraction. I would recommend speaking with the veterinarian about pain management and add on additional pain medications. The suture used to close the extraction site may be causing some irritation as well. I would maybe have the veterinarian take a look at the mouth to be on the safe side. I hope this helps!

Hi! Yes, I think Reggie's gums look like they're healing beautifully. It's normal for the gums to be a bit more red in the week following extractions. Continue to monitor his appetite to be sure that Reggie is eating normally. Excess drooling, pawing of the mouth, difficulty chewing, or bleeding/discharge from the extraction sites are all cause for concern. Otherwise, it looks like he's in good shape!

This is most likely bleeding from the gums, which is not a serious problem. Dogs tend to naw-away slowly at these bones. When they do this, they rub their gums against the bone, which causes them to bleed - much like the way our gums can bleed when flossing. Occasionally, it can cut the gums; but again, these are usually not too serious and heal quickly. It would be good to have a look in her mouth and see if there are any glaring cuts or abnormalities. This is easier to do with two people, where one holds Bella still while opening her mouth, while the other shines a light into the mouth and inspects. If anything is of concern, then you can take a picture and post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach again, or can schedule and appointment with a vet. If nothing concerning is seen and Bella seems to be OK, then no need to worry and it's likely that she will bleed again when chewing this bone. I hope that helps and all is well with Bella.

Puppies are in the process of teething from 12 weeks to 6-7 months of age, so it's completely normal to see an occasional baby tooth with a bloody root on the floor during this time :) Often, there will also be small streaks of blood on toys or chew items - this is because the pup's gums are bleeding a little, and is also normal. All of his adult teeth should be coming in within the next 2-4 weeks, so after that the problem should resolve on its own.
