My dog's first bone caused bleeding on the carpet. Is this normal?

This is most likely bleeding from the gums, which is not a serious problem. Dogs tend to naw-away slowly at these bones. When they do this, they rub their gums against the bone, which causes them to bleed - much like the way our gums can bleed when flossing. Occasionally, it can cut the gums; but again, these are usually not too serious and heal quickly.

It would be good to have a look in her mouth and see if there are any glaring cuts or abnormalities. This is easier to do with two people, where one holds Bella still while opening her mouth, while the other shines a light into the mouth and inspects.

If anything is of concern, then you can take a picture and post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach again, or can schedule and appointment with a vet.

If nothing concerning is seen and Bella seems to be OK, then no need to worry and it's likely that she will bleed again when chewing this bone.
