My dog knocked out a tooth. What should I watch for and what to do?

I would recommend a cold pack for 10 to 15 minutes 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. I would also feed only soft food. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! However, if they are loose that is usually indicative of an underlying dental issue so I would recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the baby tooth that was knocked out came out intact, meaning the entire root is present then he should be fine. If the tooth was broken then it could abscess or affect the adult tooth. The loose one will fall out on its own as that is the normal progression. If you are planning to neuter him you can do it sooner and have the vet X-ray the broken tooth and remove it while he’s under. I hope this helps!

If that is accurate, or even if he's less than 6 months old, the "baby" tooth was likely loose, and the adult canine tooth will come in around 5-7 months of age. If he seems painful in his mouth, offer him canned or other soft food for a few days. You can also give him a cold teething toy such as a Kong that you keep in the freezer, Or let him chew on a frozen waffle or even on some ice. The cool will help soothe his mouth if it is sore. I'm sorry to hear that! If its a large cheek tooth, or a canine tooth, try to get her in sooner than Saturday if at all possible. If its an incisor (one of the small teeth in the front) its probably fine to wait that long. In the meantime, offer her soft food, or moisten her dry food with water or chicken broth. You can use a dog oral rinse if you want to be proactive about it, but I don't think its entirely necessary. Whether or not specific treatment will be needed depends on what tooth it was and the extent of damage at the gumline. If there is a concern that the root fractured, or if the defect is quite large, surgery may be needed. If she seems to be painful or isn't eating anything, take her in as soon as you can. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the tooth is loose enough and your dog will let you, you can pull it out. If it won’t come out or he won’t left you, just leave it alone until tomorrow. Make an appointment with your vet tomorrow to make sure no root remains. If he wants to eat tonight, he can but I wouldn’t feed him in the morning in case the vet needs to sedate him for an oral exam. Water is ok to give. Ouch, poor Bently! You will need to take him into the vet to have his mouth examined. If the tooth broke off, there may still be a portion of the root in his gums, and it will need to be removed under sedation. I would feed him soft food tonight, as it may be painful for him to chew with a broken tooth, but don't feed him past 8pm, as he will need an empty stomach if he's to be sedated in the morning. I would take him into the vet first thing tomorrow morning.
