My Shih Tzu took extra Temaril-P. Is it safe she ran out early?

Hello, I misread my Shih Tzu’s prescription for Temaril-P. She weighs 12 pounds. The directions said to take twice a day every 12 hours for 4 days, and then take 1 tablet every other day after that. Instead she was given 1 tablet every 12 hours for 6 days instead of 4, and after that she was given 1 tablet a day and now the medication is gone. Should I worry? I tried to call my vet, but they are closed. She is acting the same as always, which is lazy.

Hello. I do not think you have too much to worry about because she was not on this medication for a long enough time to need a long withdrawl of the drug. You see, with steroids, after a certain amount of time it is best to discontinue them in a decreasing manner. 10 days is not a significant time to be on the medication & you did decrease the dose 50% for the last 4 days. If your vet is open tomorrow, just call to make sure they do not want you to pick up a few more pills just to finish off the weaning period, but otherwise, there will be no problems with how you gave her the pills. Hello, thank you for your question about Sophie. Yes Temaril-P can be used for longer than 3-4 days if the veterinarian feels it is warranted. The tapering dose that was prescribed to you is important to prevent any side effects of the medication. Some side effects that can occur include GI upset (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea) and increased drinking and urinating. My dog has accidents on Temaril-P. Can I stop it after 3 days?

On short=term use it is not necessary to taper off the Temaril-P. Check with your veterinarian though. I would still finish the prescribed course, as this medication also takes inflammation and that could still be present after the coughing stops.

My dog is lethargic and shaking after Temaril. Can I stop the meds?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Temaril is used primarily for treating allergic skin problems. If Minnie is not showing any symptoms of an allergy (for example itchy skin, ears inflammation, red skin on paws and on the abdomen) but she looks lethargic and unwell, she probably does not need Temaril at the moment. Please, get in touch with your regular vets as soon as they are available to confirm that the tablets should be stopped and to book an appointment for Minnie to make sure she is OK.

My senior Chihuahua still coughs/itches. Can he take Temaril P daily?

Temaril-P is safe to give daily. It is tapered down like this because this is required if taking the pet off the medication. So here moving forward I would suggest to give it daily and then discuss with your vet about getting additional refills of the medication before you run out so that you can safely taper him down, if at all. Temaril-P is considered an allergy medication for dogs, but it also has anti-tussive (anti-cough) properties as well. I hope that things improve with Juju moving forward. Take care.

Dog ran out of Imuran. Is it safe to miss a dose until the vet opens?

Hubert may develop mild symptoms of gastroenteritis (for example vomiting or a bout of diarrhoea) but there should not be any more serious side effects. Is it okay to give my dog Benadryl while he's taking Temeril-P?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Don’t panic! Benedryl can be safely given with Temeril-p . It may cause some drowsiness because the temeril-p already has an antihistamine in it but it sounds like that was the goal so no worries! Continue giving the Temeril P as prescribed.
