My puppy took Apoquel and Temaril-P not meant for him. Is he okay?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is very little information available in the literature about overdosage of this drug. However, there was a study were dogs received 6 times the normal dose for several weeks and mostly only gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence were observed. I think that Tippy is most likely going to be just fine though keep a close eye on her and if any of the clinical signs described above are observed, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. I have several patients that have been on it for a little over a year now and seem to be doing quite well on it. The one thing we routinely monitor is a complete blood count to make sure the immune system is not being suppressed, which Apoquel has been known to do in some patients. Other than that, I really do not see any other side effects of using Apoquel. I hope this helps! Gastrointestinal upset and a decrease in appetite can be a side effect of Apoquel but it is not very common. Often the symptoms will improve after a few days. As long as Remy is not vomiting I’d continue the medication and contact your vet to let them know once they’re open.

Hello, thank you for your question about Sophie. Yes Temaril-P can be used for longer than 3-4 days if the veterinarian feels it is warranted. The tapering dose that was prescribed to you is important to prevent any side effects of the medication. Some side effects that can occur include GI upset (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea) and increased drinking and urinating. If you begin to notice any of these side effects I would recommend reaching out to your veterinarian to see if a change in the medication schedule might be warranted. Hope this helps!

It is considered as a very safe medication with few side effects. Apoquel does not have any effect on dog's appetite. If Rocco's appetite is down, he should be checked for fever, infection, abdominal pain, liver and kidney diseases. Please, get in touch with your local vets to clarify what is Rocco's main problem and to make diagnostic and treatment plan for him.

( https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control ) Typically speaking most (not all) animals that ingest a double dose of a preventive medication are safe however, not all animals react to medications the same way. The best you can do if it has been more than an hour since he ingested it is to watch for symptoms of toxicity like: tremors, seizures, ataxia (walking drunk/unsteady), extreme lethargy, vomiting, etc. If you notice any symptoms get him to an emergency clinic ASAP. As an aside, according to studies done by Zoetis who make Simparica, "In the overdose groups, transient and self-limiting neurological signs were observed in some animals: mild tremors at 3 times the maximum exposure dose and convulsions at 5 times the maximum exposure dose. It may cause some drowsiness because the temeril-p already has an antihistamine in it but it sounds like that was the goal so no worries! Continue giving the Temeril P as prescribed.
