My senior Chihuahua still coughs/itches. Can he take Temaril P daily?

On short=term use it is not necessary to taper off the Temaril-P. Check with your veterinarian though. I would still finish the prescribed course, as this medication also takes inflammation and that could still be present after the coughing stops.

The tapering dose that was prescribed to you is important to prevent any side effects of the medication. Some side effects that can occur include GI upset (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea) and increased drinking and urinating. Temaril is a combination product of a steroid (suppresses the immune system, is an anti-inflammatory), as well as an anti-histamine (counters the histamine affect that is produced by allergies). Another possibility (less likely given the breed/age of Zeek) is a collapsing trachea (weak airway) where the steroid helped with the inflammation. The fact that Zeek responded to this medication, and it has come back when off it, is suggestive that there is either an allergy that is present that requires longer treatment, or small airway disease where the anti-inflammatory effect helped open up the airways. I recommend discussing with your vet if they feel this is seasonal allergies, and if so discusss a medication you can use longer term through the season (discuss Apoquel), as steroids long term can be hard on the body. Hello, Temaril P is a combination of an antihistamine & prednisone, a steroid. You might talk to your vet about keeping Louie on a small dose, perhaps every other day or so. There are also some eye medications that contain steroids, so the steroid effect stays localized in the eye vs an oral steroid that goes systemic. Temaril p is a combination antihistamine and steroid used to help with allergies. Some dogs have environmental allergies that are seasonal and based in exposure. This can be to things such as dust, pollen, grasses...things you can't control. They do make safer immunosuppressive medicine such as Apoquel that helps with this if needed

It all depends on how she responds to treatment. Temaril P is basically a steroid, so your vet is aiming to decrease acute airway inflammation right now. It's possible she'll able to come of medication entirely, or she may need a low dose of steroid long term. She could also need a couch medication long term.

Hello. I do not think you have too much to worry about because she was not on this medication for a long enough time to need a long withdrawl of the drug. You see, with steroids, after a certain amount of time it is best to discontinue them in a decreasing manner. 10 days is not a significant time to be on the medication & you did decrease the dose 50% for the last 4 days. If your vet is open tomorrow, just call to make sure they do not want you to pick up a few more pills just to finish off the weaning period, but otherwise, there will be no problems with how you gave her the pills.
