Can I use old Tobramycin eye drops for my dog's green eye discharge?

It's not recommended to put antibiotic eye drops before having it checked by a vet first, it's important to check the eyes and make sure there is no ulcer or other damage before starting any topical treatment.

Hello again. Yes, human artificial tears are fine, that is what I use in the office. You can place a few drops into the eye every hour, or every few hours. It totally depends on your schedule. I would want to instill the drops at least 3-4 times a day. You can not over apply. Any concerns, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. I would perhaps give it a few more days if the discharge is not green or yellow. Wipe the eyes clean several times daily. If the discharge does become green or yellow, if Oakley starts rubbing his eyes or squinting more than usual, if the whites of his eyes are looking red or if his eyes look cloudy then a trip to the vet is in order. If he develops any respiratory signs (nasal discharge, cough, sneeze, trouble breathing), then an exam is needed. Best of luck to you and Oakley!

Dry eye can result in the discharge in the picture you posted and can require more than just Artificial Tears to treat. (That would be more common than an allergy problem especially since only one eye is affected.) I recommend you use an E-collar so he doesn't rub the eye and cause a scratch on the surface of the eye. Do not put anything in the eye until you see your Vet. Ointments or drops for the eye are made specifically to be safe for use in the eye. Ointments for the skin are not safe to be put in the eye. I wish you the best and Nico a speedy recovery!

I am so sorry to hear that Isabeau is experiencing the green discharge problems with her eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Her to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Isabeau to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. For example if a corneal ulcer is present in addition to an infection. This is an especially important point while Isabeau is pregnant, and vetroplolycin may not be the appropriate medication for the precise issue with her eyes or while she is pregnant. It sounds like Falkor may have an eye infection. You can gently clean the eye out with saline, but I would not use those medications you have on them. Legally, I cannot say if it's safe to use them on Falkor because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. They could also be the wrong drug for his condition, and they could be expired. His eye does need to be examined by a vet, which can let you know if it's safe to use those medications, or can prescribe him new ones. I would have him seen by a vet right (and bring the meds with you), as any eye condition should be considered an emergency (leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss).
