Why is my dog throwing up water with blood but acting normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old

My dog is heaving up water with little flecks of bloodles. He isn't appearing otherwise sick. He still eats, sometimes he'll refuse a treat.

Poor Hades. Vomiting up small amounts of blood could be a sign that he has a stomach ulcer. The severity of the ulcer can vary depending on how deep it is. I would recommend at least having him checked by your veterinarian and given some medications to help coat his stomach and intestinal lining to give things time to heal properly. He also may need to go on a short course of antacids to reduce the acid load for a while to allow things to heal well.

Throwing up blood is serious, and can be a sign of GI ulcers, a foreign body, GI tumors, or poisoning (such as from rat bait). Even if it is little flecks of blood, it's not normal and it should be investigated. It's also not normal for Hades to throw up water. I would take him into the vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and how best to treat it.

Poor Max! Throwing up blood is always concerning - this could be caused by a number of things, including a bleeding stomach ulcer, severe gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, a foreign body in the stomach, a systemic bleeding disorder, or even stomach cancer. This symptoms is always very serious and warrants an immediate vet visit, so I would recommend taking Max to the vet right away for an exam. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help determine the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

Vomiting blood is very serious, and if he's been vomiting for a few days, it could be this vomiting has caused damage to stomach and/or esophagus. Regardless, vomiting blood is a medical emergency, and he has to see a vet now,. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Hello. A small amount of blood in vomitus may simply indicate that a small blood vessel, like a capillary, ruptured during the vomiting act. If it occurs again, it might be a good idea to find out if there are any issues or lesions either in the esophagus or upper part of the stomach. You indicate that Sonny is less than 2 years of age, so I would nor expect anything too serious, such as cancer, but the presence of an inflammatory or erosive lesion is a possibility. Your veterinarian may be able to examine the upper part of Sonny's esophagus under light sedation, or he may need to be thoroughly scoped to examine the lower part of the esophagus & stomach. My dog keeps throwing up blood monthly. What's the real issue?

I recommend to have her checked for stomach worms. If everything looks normal there, I recommend to look into an abdominal ultrasound or an endoscope (which would be best). This is the best way to look for any masses or evidence of cancer. You may also ask your veterinarian about starting an anti-acid protocol which could help. I hope they figure it out quickly!

I hate to hear Jedi is sick. Vomiting blood is always concerning and any pet who is vomiting blood needs to be examined by the veterinarian today.
