My dog threw up a dental chew. Why did this happen and is it serious?

If only Reign could talk! I am concerned that whatever was making him sick is still continuing. I recommend to offer the bland diet of chicken and rice again. I also recommend to call your veterinarian to figure out your options. Your vet likely has COVID protocols in place to protect themselves and the staff. Continued issues could mean many things that could range from parasites (including giardia) to a foreign object blocking the outflow tract in his stomach. I think he may be panting ans shaking from the act of vomiting. If you remember, vomiting is not a good feeling, so when it happened, your dog may have gotten upset. He may be a bit sensitive to the ingredients of the dental twist. I am not a fan of rawhide, as it tends to swell up in the stomach, and can cause an obstruction at the exit of the stomach or in the small intestine, especially if the rawhide was swallowed whole instead of being chewed. So it is likely that he did not chew it very well, and it expanded in the stomach which then reacted by making your dog regurgitate it. The time frame of about half an hour fits s well as this is about how long it takes to moisten and swell the raw hide. I think he will be ok, and there is no need yet to take him to the vet. If he vomits more often or states getting diarrhea or appears lethargic after a while (in a few hours) you should take him to the vet. However at this time I would let him settle down and rest and calm down. Do not give him another twist, though.

Vomiting can happen for a multitude of reasons. Eating a new item, overindulgence, or eating something disagreeable in the yard are all possible. If he is back to normal today with good appetite, energy, and no more vomiting I would just continue to monitor him.

He could indeed have something stuck in his throat I strongly recommend getting him in to see your vet immediately. It sounds like he's trying to move whatever is stuck and not having much success. He needs to be seen before he hurts himself.

However, if he continues to vomit, becomes lethargic, stops eating or develops diarrhea, then he will need to see his veterinarian. In this case, fecal testing, bloodwork and x-rays of his belly are diagnostic tests that may be recommended. In the meantime, monitor him closely for any other symptoms. Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In a dog this young that you describe as chewing and tearing apart everything I would be most worried about a gastric foreign body that is intermittently causing a blockage. Pieces of toys or trash that are swallowed can get stuck in the pylorus - that's the part of the stomach that leads to the small intestine - and this causes vomiting. The vomiting will often temporarily dislodge the object, allowing things to return to normal for a while, only to block the outflow again. I'd urge you to get Max x-rayed at your vet. A barium series may be required to completely rule out a partial obstruction.
