Why is my dog still throwing up after eating a dental stick?

If Abby is otherwise fine and not lethargic and has normal energy, I would initiate a bland diet as directed below. This could be due to dietary indiscretion or the dentastix could have caused this due to causing GI upset or causing an obstruction. If Abby continues to vomit on the bland diet or becomes lethargic or sick, I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It is low in fiber, fat and protein and is high in carbohydrates. Bland diets are generally composed of a single carbohydrate source and a single lean protein source. The most common bland diet is boiled rice and boiled lean chicken breast, without skin and bones. Since bland diets are low in fiber, stool production slows and defecation is less frequent. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. BASIC BOILED RICE AND CHICKEN BLAND DIET RECIPE CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE: Boiled white rice LEAN PROTEIN SOURCE: Chicken breast, no skin and bones BOILED RICE: 1 part white rice with 3 parts water boiled for 20 – 25 minutes or until the rice is easily crushed. BOILED CHICKEN: De-fat chicken breast and boil in water for 10 – 15 minutes or until the chicken meat is easily pulled apart and cooked all way through. MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: Finely chop the lean protein and mix 2 cups carbohydrate source and ½ cup lean protein source. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Bland diets can be premade and stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 48 hours. The bland diet can be cooked in a batch and frozen in feeding sized portions to minimize preparation time. Thaw and warm the frozen diet prior to feeding. Smaller animals will require less and larger animals will require more adhering to the same carbohydrate to lean protein source ratio. The bland diet should be fed for 4 -5 days with no treats or other food sources until stools are firm. TRANSITION BACK TO A NORMAL DIET Never transition back to a regular diet rapidly. Transition back to the regular diet over a 1 week period. Start by adding 25% of the regular diet to 75% of the bland diet and feed that combination for 2 days. If stools continue to be firm then continue substituting the regular diet in 25% increments and feeding the combination in 2 day time intervals until the diet is 100% regular diet. Minimize treats for 1 week after moving the diet back to 100% regular diet.

That looks like a partially digested piece of a dental chew. It's hard to say why he threw up this morning. Hopefully he just has a mild stomach upset that will resolve quickly. Sometimes this happens if dogs eat too quickly, eat a new food item or diet, or if they have stomach acid buildup. Other more serious possibilities would be inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), a bowel obstruction, or an infection. You can continue to monitor him today, but if he continues to vomit or develops other symptoms of illness, it's best to have him evaluated by a vet to make sure it's not a serious problem. A bland diet may help in the meantime.

As long as she is eating, drinking and not lethargic / inappetant then I would just monitor her at home. If she begins to exhibit any of the above mentioned symptoms, I would get her seen by a veterinarian for an examination and to have abdominal x-rays taken to make sure that there is no intestinal obstruction from the bully stick. Consider a recheck with your veterinarian. An abdominal x-ray may diagnose a foreign body or even an obstruction. Since Rocco isn't eating, supportive care may be indicated to prevent dehydration. You can try feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount if he eats and holds it down. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with one of the following: cottage cheese, cooked/drained ground turkey, cooked/drained ground beef or boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts. Mix rice and the protein source in a 1:1 ratio.

Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. If Kassi hasn't had soft food before, this change of diet could be causing the soft stool and vomiting. It could also be caused by any medication she is currently taking. If you are sure it is her teeth, have her examined by your veterinarian. Periodontal disease can lead to systemic disease, bad breath or tooth loss if left untreated. If she has any degree of periodontal disease, she will require anesthesia for a dental cleaning and any periodontal treatment. Your vet should perform a complete exam and blood work to confirm your dog is a good anesthetic candidate. Periodontal disease typically does not present as you describe so a visit to your vet is highly recommended. The GI upset can be managed by withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not, see your veterinarian.
