My dog has tea tree oil poisoning. Can a vet still treat him?

Pokey sounds very ill and needs immediate veterinary treatment. This could be from poison or more likely an infection, metabolic problem or cancer. She definitely needs IV fluids to prevent dehydration which can become life threatening. In general with most poisons they would die quickly. Since this has been going on for a few days there is a good chance with proper treatment she could recover quickly. Poor guy. Tea tree oil is a pretty nasty irritant to the stomach when ingested. You can try giving him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, along with 1-2 tsp's of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling). I would also give him some non-flavored Pedialyte diluted with water to help prevent dehydration. If he is still having a hard time after another 24 hrs, then it is best to take him to your vet for stronger medication to help stop the nausea and treat his diarrhea with antibiotics. If there was to be a problem, it would typically show up within 2-12 hours after exposure. If you see depression, weakness, incoordination, muscle tremors, salivation, vomiting, a skin rash, or collapse, get him into a vet immediately. I'd monitor him for the time period I mentioned above, but after that time period passes and if there are no signs, he should be ok. I hope this helps!

HI, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Honey! Tea tree oil is toxic at high concentrations. If you washed it off and she hasn't licked it and is acting fine she will be ok. Watch her for lethargy or neurologic signs. if she isn't showing symptoms there is nothing to do preventatively. I would try a triple antibiotic on the wound and an antihistamine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am concerned that because he vomited so many times and had diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated. Also, mushrooms can result in liver toxicity in dogs that tends to be significant. Even if he vomited some of it, there is still likely some left in his system. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check some basic lab work to check for signs of liver toxicity and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ludo! Tea Tree oil is safe in very dilute concentrations. It depends on the concentration of the shampoo you used whether it has anything to do with Ludo's symptoms. The issue with cats is that they groom and can lick the tea tree oil off. Symptoms are usually drooling and nausea in mild cases to tremors and seizures in severe cases. Symptoms usually occur with a few hours to 12 hours after exposure. There is no antidote just supportive care and bathing the tea tree oil off. Sometimes the pet needs 3 days of supportive care to get off the toxicity. Just a like humans, dogs sometimes vomit a couple times (for many reasons) and then are completely fine. If the vomiting recurrs or you see other concerning signs like loss of appetite, extreme lethargy, or anything else That concerns you, head in to the vet to figure out what’s going on.
