Why is my dog's face swollen with a hard bump, no visible wound?

I do not recommend you give him those pills as they are unlikely to help. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. The concern here is that the swelling is spreading, and it could get big enough to obstruct her breathing. I think it's best to have her seen by a vet now to get this treated. I hope this helps.

To know how to better manage this, it would be needed to reach a diagnosis. For that reason, I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello. A localized swelling like this in a relatively young dog is probably just some kind of allergic reaction. I agree with you that it is probably from an insect sting or bite. If Buddy will allow it, you can apply a cool compress or an ice cube wrapped in a wash cloth for as long as he will tolerate it. If it is not significantly down by tomorrow, you may want your vet to take a look, but there does not seem to be anything very worrisome about this. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! From the pictures you have provided, I would suspect this to be a skin tumor. It looks to be benign and similar to what we call a sebaceous adenoma. It may have been much smaller previously and if it was bumped or traumatized may have grown in size due to inflammation. If this is bleeding and does not go down in size, I would suggest having it removed. Many of these can be frozen off with cryo treatment that many vet clinics provide as a service. It is very hard to tell from the image if the face is swollen on one side or not as we can't see both sides and don't know what his normal face looks like. That being said, if there is generalized (not a specific or discreet area) swelling of the muzzle, +/- around the eyes, +/- the ears, this is more consistent with a bee sting or insect bite and allergic reaction. This can be itchy as well. I would look for areas of hives or raised bumps on his body elsewhere. Ideally he would go to a vet to get a couple injections, one of a steroid (depending on how bad the swelling is and what other medications he is on, steroids can be very dangerous) and an anti-histamine. Without an exam by a vet, you shouldn't give any human medications to dogs, as the drugs may interact with medications he is on or conditions he might have. You vet might prescribe an anti-histamine (Benedryl is a common product used in the US. You MUST make sure diphenhydramine is the ONLY active ingredient as other human medications that are sometimes in anti-histamines can be very dangerous to dogs. The dose for a dog Hercules' size would be about 50-100mg by mouth up to three times a day). Other causes of swelling/lumps would be a bump or hit and swelling, infection, he could have something in his mouth, etc. If it is small lump/swelling and he doesn't seem bothered by it, the best thing to do might be to just monitor it for now. If it doesn't get bigger/more swollen or the swelling doesn't spread, then you can just keep an eye on it. If it isn't gone by 24-48 hours have it seen by a vet.
