Why is my dog's snout suddenly swollen after a walk, no injury?

My dog has swelling around her snout. It has just begin this evening after she took a walk. We noticed it on the right side of her snout and has spread to the top and is now swelling on the left side of her snout. She keeps licking at the area. We have noticed no puncture marks or any indication of a wound causing the inflammation. Her teeth appear to be normal and healthy. Can you tell us what else might cause this?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. This could be an allergic reaction is there is no sign of trauma. The concern here is that the swelling is spreading, and it could get big enough to obstruct her breathing. I think it's best to have her seen by a vet now to get this treated. I hope this helps.

This may be from an insect bite or sting or could be a snake bite, which is more dangerous. I would recommend taking your dog in to be checked out. If it is a snake bite she will need prompt treatment.

Hi, Maxwell must have been in contact with something that caused an allergic reaction. I would recommend to have him checked over so that he can receive some medications to reduce the swelling and help him feel more comfortable. It is very important that at no point is breathing is impaired, and this is one of the risks if the swelling continues to progress. Hope he is better soon.

It could be an allergic reaction of some kind, a bacterial or fungal infection, or an autoimmune disease. I really think you should take her to a vet for an exam. If it is starting in other locations on her body then then I would be very worried about this being an autoimmune disease (such as pemphigus). This is not something that you will be able to treat at home.

She may have injured it, have an infection, a growth in it, or is suffering from an allergic reaction. She will have to see a vet for this. If she can breathe ok, isn't lethargic, and is otherwise acting normally, it can wait until the morning. I see what you mean about the swelling, it is quite pronounced! This could be from a bug bite or it could be an allergic reaction. Oftentimes Benadryl is not strong enough to treat these issues, and stronger drugs like steroids may be needed. The best thing to do for her is take her into a vet immediately to get this treated. My dog's nose is suddenly swollen. What's causing it and what to do?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like Gunther either got a bump on the nose and that is a bit of a bruise, or more likely was either bitten or stung by an insect. I would recommend monitoring it closely. If you notice the muzzle/around the eyes/jaw/lips/ears starting to swell, or if you notice hives on Gunther, then I would get him to a vet right away for a couple injections to stop the allergic reaction. Otherwise, I would just monitor the bump. If it grows at all, or has any discharge, or doesn't go away in 2 days, then I would have it looked at by a vet. Best of luck with Gunther.

My dog woke up with a swollen snout. What's causing it and what to do?

A swollen muzzle is most commonly due to an allergic reaction, often to an insect bite or bee sting. It could also be from an infection near her muzzle. If she's otherwise acting completely normal you can monitor her; an allergic reaction should get gradually better and usually resolves in 24 hours or sooner. An infection would not improve without antibiotics, so if the swelling continues or if any other symptoms appear she should be seen by a vet. Hope this helps!
