My dog has a swollen eye and bumps on his nose. Is it a bug bite?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 81 lbs

Hi, I noticed our dog has some swelling under his eye. I’m wondering if it’s from a horse fly or a bee or something. My husband isn’t sure if he would have hit it something when he was playing. About an hour later, I noticed bumps on his nose. So I feel like it’s probably bug bites. I’m not sure if you can tell from the pictures. I figured I’d try asking anyway.

Hello. A localized swelling like this in a relatively young dog is probably just some kind of allergic reaction. I agree with you that it is probably from an insect sting or bite. If Buddy will allow it, you can apply a cool compress or an ice cube wrapped in a wash cloth for as long as he will tolerate it. If it is not significantly down by tomorrow, you may want your vet to take a look, but there does not seem to be anything very worrisome about this. Based on the photos and the symptoms you are describing it seems like your dog is having an allergic reaction. I would encourage you to seek veterinary care so that they can administer antihistamine or steroid medication.

This could be caused by an allergic reaction or possibly an infection.
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

It could be a bacterial skin infection or an allergic dermatitis. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid. Have your vet examine him to determine the cause and prescribe medications to treat.

If it is not bothering him, then there is probably not too much to worry about, You can apply a cold compress to the area ( a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel works well ) for 5-10 minutes every hour or so, but if he begins whining, scratching his face, or pawing at his eyes, you may need to run him in to your vet for steroids, &/or antihistamines. I see what you mean about the swelling, it is quite pronounced! This could be from a bug bite or it could be an allergic reaction. Oftentimes Benadryl is not strong enough to treat these issues, and stronger drugs like steroids may be needed. The best thing to do for her is take her into a vet immediately to get this treated. My dog has a pus-filled bump on his snout. Is it infection? Benadryl?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Those bumps do not look like a bug bite reaction as but bite reactions are usually haired swellings in the skin. I would be worried that these are an infection or masses of a different type (benign (non-cancerous) masses or more concerningly a cancerous mass). If they popped up quickly then they are more likely infection. I would recommend not giving Benedryl, putting an e-collar on Kelso so that he can't scratch them open, and get him to a vet as soon as possible for testing and medications. Best of luck with Kelso.

My dog's nose is swollen, itchy, and lumpy. Could it be an allergy?

This is most likely due to an allergic reaction. On the muzzle this is usually happens with an insect sting, or reaction to a poisonous plant (i.e. poison oak). This is usually temporary, but can lead to a skin infection, so it's good to flush the area with cool water 2-3 times a day. Flush the area using a syringe or other dispensing device with cool water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate water getting near their face. I recommend having someone help you with holding Bob to make sure the area gets flushed well. After flushing, you can apply aloe gel to the area to provide more relief. If the swelling is not going down within two days, then I would reccomend taking him to the vet for an evaluation. It may take a week for it to look normal, but it should start to look better within a couple of days. These reactions have the potential to get worse, so if the swelling is increasing, or Bob is having trouble breathing, then be he should go to the vet as soon as possible for treatment. If it is not bothering Peanut at all, just monitor him at home and the swelling should disappear in less than 24hrs. If it becomes itchy and your dog stars to have fast and noisy respiration, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

I see what you mean about Jasper's swelling! It could be from an insect's sting, but it could also be a contact allergy. If you won't let you put ice on it, I wouldn't keep trying it. Keep an eye on it tonight, and if the swelling is still present in the morning or keeps worse, take him into a vet for treatment.

My dog's nose is suddenly swollen. What's causing it and what to do?

It looks like Gunther either got a bump on the nose and that is a bit of a bruise, or more likely was either bitten or stung by an insect. I would recommend monitoring it closely. If you notice the muzzle/around the eyes/jaw/lips/ears starting to swell, or if you notice hives on Gunther, then I would get him to a vet right away for a couple injections to stop the allergic reaction. Otherwise, I would just monitor the bump. If it grows at all, or has any discharge, or doesn't go away in 2 days, then I would have it looked at by a vet. Best of luck with Gunther.
