Dog's swollen eye from trauma: Why is she pawing it after ointment?

The sclera looking purple is very concerning for severe irritation and the pawing may indicate that Tinky is in pain. Just like humans, pets can get many eye issues and it could range from an infection to glaucoma or even a tumor. I recommend to have Tinky examined today if possible. It's important to determine the underlying cause and to make her more comfortable quickly. Pawing at the eye is also bad since she could cause a scratch. She should wear an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent injury. Best of luck.

That looks like chemosis - swelling of the conjunctiva. The underlying cause, I don't know. All the things I can think of that can cause chemosis should easily resolve with topical steroids. Since it is not resolving, then yes, I think a consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist would be necessary at this point. Best wishes.

From the photo, it does look like there is a slight reduction in the swelling but this seems like a slower response than expected. Keep in mind every pet is different and every pet responds differently but I recommend to call your veterinarian. Ask about sending in the photos and describe what you are seeing. Continue the eye drops as directed as eyes take a while to heal. Depending on the injury, it can take anywhere from a few days to weeks for things to heal completely. As long as he is comfortable, I would say continuing your current regimen is the way to go. If you notice squinting, rubbing at the eye, or the inflammation getting worse, I would have it rechecked as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

It is difficult to give advice without actually seeing the eye. You are welcome to post again with a photo if you'd like. That being said, as long as she is not pawing at the eye, scratching at it or squinting then you can probably wait until your vet opens again to take her for a recheck exam. Continue to put the medications in as prescribed. If you are noticing squinting or that the eye is actually bothering her then you need to get her to a vet ASAP for an exam. Hope this helps. If Rex is squinting his eye and you're seeing swelling, Rex should be seen by a vet right away. Swelling of the eyelids & tissue *around* the eye may resolve after trauma, but if the globe (eyeball) is injured he may need treatment to protect that eye. And if the eye is fine, he'd probably appreciate if the vet prescribed a good anti-inflammatory pain medication for his comfort!

Hello, Soffie has hair loss around her eye but I cannot visualize the eye itself. The hair loss may be secondary to mites. In order to find out. Soffie needs to have her skin scraped and her eye examined. You will need to follow up with a veterinarian to have this performed. Please apply an E-collar to prevent her from scratching more.
