My dog's eye is still red after medication, what should I do?

From the photo, it does look like there is a slight reduction in the swelling but this seems like a slower response than expected. Keep in mind every pet is different and every pet responds differently but I recommend to call your veterinarian. Ask about sending in the photos and describe what you are seeing. I do not recommend giving any medications unless directed by your vet. He could have a corneal ulcer, infection, scratch, or foreign body in his eye. Your vet can do some testing to diagnose and then prescribe the best medication to treat. He may need an antibiotic to treat.

It seems like the medication is somewhat effective if the swelling has gone down. A red/swollen eye often indicates an infection/inflammation within the eye. These problems usually take a great deal of time and medication before they are cleared, so if it's been less than two weeks, then I would continue the medication as prescribed and give it some more time. I suspect that the snorting has to do with the tear drainage and/or the eyedrops. There is a duct that connects the corner of the eye to the nose called the nasolacrimal duct, where excessive tears will drain. This often will make them sneeze and snort. If the nose has yellow or green discharge, then I would be concerned of something else going on and would recommend a vet recheck. Without knowing the specific eye problem Blondie has, it's difficult for me to assess how well the treatment is going. It would be best if you can schedule a recheck with the prescribing veterinarian, because they may have some better insight. I hope that helps and Blondie gets better soon.

Bleu has such pretty eyes!! I would recommend a recheck with your vet now that some of the swelling and redness has resolved. There may be something additional going on that needs to be addressed, or perhaps she needs to receive a different type of eye drops. Be sure and ask your veterinarian to take a close look at Bleu’s eyelids-sometimes, especially in young growing dogs, the lower (and occasionally upper) eyelid can roll onwards and irritate the surface of the eye-This is called entropion and can require surgery to correct. I hope you are able to get Bleu’s eye redness resolved soon!

I recommend calling your veterinarian. When pets do not respond to treatment as expected, that can mean that the real reason for the illness was not discovered. I suspect the veterinarian will need to examined Aura again and check for a foreign object trapped under the eye lid or uveitis. Call the vet today. Best of luck.

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Pawing at the eye is a sign of pain or at least irritation. Not having examined the eye myself, it is not possible to tell you how long this will take to resolve and I suggest you call your veterinarian tomorrow and ask him. You may also want to ask him about pain medicine.
