Dog eye injury on meds, still swollen. When should I call the vet?

It is difficult to give advice without actually seeing the eye. You are welcome to post again with a photo if you'd like. That being said, as long as she is not pawing at the eye, scratching at it or squinting then you can probably wait until your vet opens again to take her for a recheck exam. Continue to put the medications in as prescribed. If you are noticing squinting or that the eye is actually bothering her then you need to get her to a vet ASAP for an exam. Hope this helps. Continue the eye drops as directed as eyes take a while to heal. Depending on the injury, it can take anywhere from a few days to weeks for things to heal completely. As long as he is comfortable, I would say continuing your current regimen is the way to go. If you notice squinting, rubbing at the eye, or the inflammation getting worse, I would have it rechecked as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

I recommend calling your veterinarian. When pets do not respond to treatment as expected, that can mean that the real reason for the illness was not discovered. I suspect the veterinarian will need to examined Aura again and check for a foreign object trapped under the eye lid or uveitis. Call the vet today. Best of luck.

I would say it’s not unreasonable for 4 days post-op but the swelling should be going down rapidly at this point. If it’s not improved by tomorrow, I’d pop in to see the vet who did the surgery to make sure there is not a complication such as seroma or hematoma (fluids or blood pocket). In the mean time, I recommend warm packing for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times daily. To do this, soak a wash cloth in warm water, wring it out, and put it in a plastic bag. Apply gently to the surgery site. Seepage of some clearish fluids may happen and this is just fine. Best wishes to you and Nemi!

Pawing at the eye is a sign of pain or at least irritation. Not having examined the eye myself, it is not possible to tell you how long this will take to resolve and I suggest you call your veterinarian tomorrow and ask him. You may also want to ask him about pain medicine.

It seems like the medication is somewhat effective if the swelling has gone down. A red/swollen eye often indicates an infection/inflammation within the eye. These problems usually take a great deal of time and medication before they are cleared, so if it's been less than two weeks, then I would continue the medication as prescribed and give it some more time. I suspect that the snorting has to do with the tear drainage and/or the eyedrops. There is a duct that connects the corner of the eye to the nose called the nasolacrimal duct, where excessive tears will drain. This often will make them sneeze and snort. If the nose has yellow or green discharge, then I would be concerned of something else going on and would recommend a vet recheck. Without knowing the specific eye problem Blondie has, it's difficult for me to assess how well the treatment is going. It would be best if you can schedule a recheck with the prescribing veterinarian, because they may have some better insight. I hope that helps and Blondie gets better soon.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It sounds like you have done all you are going to be able to do for her at home. I would recommend a visit to the emergency vet if there is one in your area, if not see your vet first thing in the morning as she is likely going to need oral antibiotics as well as pain medication, and should have the eye examined to be sure there was no damage to the eye itself. Continue to ice the area to help with pain and swelling until she is seen. You can take a bag of frozen peas or corn and wrap in a thin cloth/towel (don't put the ice pack directly on the skin with no barrier in between) for 5-10 minutes every few hours if she will tolerate this. Do not give any over the counter pain medication because these can be poorly tolerated by dogs and may cause more harm than good.
