Dog's eye swollen and squinting after injury. Should I see a vet?

Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care. Try to get her seen soon to avoid further trauma to the eye which may be irreversible. I hope that Suzie Lu's eye injury resolves soon! Best of luck and take care. : )

This is an emergency, your vet should see you right away, if he refuses you have to take him to another vet that will see him today. cloudiness of the eye is a very serious symptom, there are several eye condition that could cause that but it is important to start the treatment urgently, otherwise permanent eye damage could occur.

I am sorry to see that Tank’s eye is abnormal. The squinting and elevated third eyelid and slight swelling concerns me about the possibility of a scratch to the eyeball, however that can not be diagnosed with a picture. If the eye is still squinting and painful tomorrow then he needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If the eye does have a scratch it should be treated with antibiotics to prevent an infection and further chance of damage to the eye. Poor Alpha! The most common reasons for swollen eyes are bee strings/bug bites or an allergic reaction (of which you generally never know the cause). Trauma or something stuck in the eye could also cause swelling in the area. Carefully check the area for any stingers or marks. You can apply a cold (not cold) compress to the area. Unfortunately, unless you find a stinger, you won't know the cause. You must also protect the area from rubbing with an elizabethan collar since rubbing could make it worse. I recommend to play it safe and have Alpha examined by the veterinarian today. The doctor will check the eye as well as look for clues as to the cause. If an allergic reaction is suspected, he will likely receive an injectable antihistamine and possible a steroid or anti-inflammatory. Just like with humans, some pets may experience an anaphylactic reaction. Monitor your dog for signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, general weakness or a progression of swelling. If you see any of those signs this could indicate a serious anaphylactic reaction and you need to take him into the vet immediately. Also, if the swelling doesn't go down after 24 hours, take him into your vet. Best of luck.

It could be self-inflicted trauma from excessive scratching, or it may be a blunt injury from walking into something or being scratched by another animal. As there is a risk of damage to the cornea, I would suggest you to take Cooper to your local vets today to fully examine the eye and to get treatment for him.

Poor Sassy! That is very swollen. If it is just the eyelid that is affected, it should be fine to wait until tomorrow to take her to the vet, but if anything gets worse overnight, I would take her right in. If you see signs such as squinting, redness, drainage from the eye, or a cloudiness in the clear part of the eye, I would take her in tonight. Injuries to the eyeball can be very serious and get worse very quickly. I hope this helps and that Sassy gets better very soon!

I would recommend a check up by your vet - it looks like the third eyelid is inflamed (common with viral infections) and may be developing a cherry eye. In the meantime, bathing with sterile saline eye wash may help keep the eye fresh and clean and reduce any discomfort
