Dog swallowed a bone. Why is she coughing, gagging, or gurgling?

I am sorry to hear about Xena. I would definitely keep a close eye on her for the next few days and if she has any additional gagging, any vomiting, decreased appetite, change in voice or increased drooling or is pawing at her face, stretching her neck or having trouble breathing she should be seen right away. We do see issues with dogs ingesting bones that can range from bones getting lodged in the throat to causing GI obstruction to splintered bone penetrating the tissues. I personally do not recommend the use of bones for dogs because we see problems too often from giving these as treats.

If Stella is eating her treats too fast, that could be causing the choking. Try giving her treats in smaller pieces, not giving her another piece until she ate the previous piece. Keep an eye on her for now with this behavior, and offer her some water. Her throat may be irritated from choking. If this behavior continues or she starts having trouble breathing, have her seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Your dog still may vomit the bone or some of the bone fragments and she will probably have an upset stomach for a day or so. She will probably also develop diarrhea or soft stools because of ingesting the bones. Keep a close eye on her and if the vomiting lasts more than 24 hours or she starts having bloody stools, you will need to take her to the veterinarian. Poor Stella. This sounds like a possible Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) which is common in dogs just like the common cold in people. If she has been coughing with no improvement for more than 3-4 days, then its best to get her seen by your vet to have her evaluated and treated. Sometimes URI's can improve on their own, but in many cases a short course of antibiotics are needed to help resolve them completely. I hope that your fur baby Stella feels better soon! Poor girl. I would monitor her for the next few hours and if she just keeps trying to vomit, you will need to have her seen by your local vet bc she may have it stuck in her esophagus. Only offer her water until you know that she is ok, stops vomiting and is not in distress. I do hope that Chhutki is going to be ok. Best of luck and take care .

She could certainly have irriation from the bone she ate, especially if she choked on it. Keep an eye on her and if the coughing continues for more than 48 hrs, then she should be seen by your vet for a suspected upper airway infection. As long as she is still active, eating well and using the bathroom normal, it is ok to monitor for now. I hope that Lily's cough resolves soon! Best wishes and take care. : )

He could indeed have something stuck in his throat I strongly recommend getting him in to see your vet immediately. It sounds like he's trying to move whatever is stuck and not having much success. He needs to be seen before he hurts himself.
