My dog ate a cooked bone. What should I do about her stomach issues?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed

Dog ate cooked bone earlier and coughed for a while after digesting she now has constant stomach noises and is a bit uneasy but shows no signs of vomiting

Your dog still may vomit the bone or some of the bone fragments and she will probably have an upset stomach for a day or so. She will probably also develop diarrhea or soft stools because of ingesting the bones.

Keep a close eye on her and if the vomiting lasts more than 24 hours or she starts having bloody stools, you will need to take her to the veterinarian. Likewise, if she refuses to eat for more than 12-24 hours you should take her in.

This is a medical emergency and Holly has to see a vet now. If she ate a bone three days ago, this could be causing an obstruction leading her to violently throwing up and be unable to pass feces. A laxative will not cure an obstruction. If this bone is causing an obstruction, she will need surgery to remove it. An obstruction is fatal without treatment, and Holly needs veterinary attention right away. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is very concerning for a possible gastrointestinal obstruction. I would highly recommend you consider having Homie evaluated as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this and possibly confirm it. If this is actually diagnosed, surgery may be needed. Another possibility is dietary indiscretion though I am more concerned about an obstruction. Good luck and have a great day!

Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Eli! The fresh bone may be causing an upset tummy or even a blockage if a large piece was broken off. Also raw meat and bone can contain bacteria that can cause vomiting or diarrhea (like food poisoning). I would resume feeding the mutton and bone as previous, cooked. In the mean time stop the fresh mutton and feed her a bland diet of rice with boiled chicken or hamburger as small frequent meal for 3-5 days. Then resume her old diet. If she refuses to eat or continues to vomit then she should be seen by your Vet. Have a great day!

It could be due to dietary indiscretion or even more concerning due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. The fact that Bailey ate dinner and did not vomit makes me think that it is less likely for this to be an obstruction though if the vomiting resumes or he stops eating, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. My dog ate rib bones and has diarrhea. When should I see a vet?

Poor Devious! Many dogs will have an upset stomach after eating something like this. The biggest concern is that the rib bones can have sharp edges and may cause an intestinal perforation, or they could become stuck and cause a blockage in her intestines. Signs of these problems would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat - if she develops any of these symptoms, she needs to see a vet immediately as she may need emergency surgery to remove the bones. If she is acting normal right now apart from some runny stool, you can try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help settle her stomach and get things back to normal. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as the ones I listed above, you will need to take her to the vet right away for an exam and treatment.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should monitor your dog at home for signs of vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors, abdominal pain, lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms you should take your dog to your local vets as an emergency. Typically, the symptoms of food intoxication commence within 2-6 hrs after ingestion. Inducing vomiting in dogs that ate bones is never recommended as it pose a risk of esophageal tear from the sharp bones. Salmonellosis is a potential risk after eating decomposing food, however, Salmonella infection is not common in dogs in general. Typically, the symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
