My dog choked on a treat. Why does she keep gagging and coughing?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 8 months old | 8 lbs

My dog eats her treats fast. Well she started choking after eating it. She stoped, but now every few minutes starts again. She’s acting like she’s trying to bring something up, but doesn’t . Is it an irritated throat or something worse. If it were caught, I’d think she wouldn’t be able to even breathe

If Stella is eating her treats too fast, that could be causing the choking. Try giving her treats in smaller pieces, not giving her another piece until she ate the previous piece. Keep an eye on her for now with this behavior, and offer her some water. Her throat may be irritated from choking. If this behavior continues or she starts having trouble breathing, have her seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.
