My dog choked on a treat. Why does she keep gagging and coughing?

Not sure why he is choking, but a physical examination and oral exam by your vet may reveal some abnormalities and answers as to why this is happening. However if he is not choking while eating his dry kibble food, then I wouldn't be too concerned about an abnormality being present. I would just recommend that you refrain from continuing to give him the treats that he chokes on. Some pets are just too aggressive with some treats, such as raw hide bones, and instead of chewing them thoroughly, they swallow them whole resulting in choking behavior. The solution to this problem is to not give them certain types of treats that give them problems.

It sounds like she likely has some damage to her throat/esophagus from the bone. This sounds minor and will likely heal quickly, but I would have to examine her to know for sure. For now, it's fine to wait and feed soft food for the next couple of days. You can soften dry food by just adding a little water and waiting a couple of minutes. If she is not getting better, or is getting worse in the next 2-3 days, then it's best to have a vet evaluate her. I hope that helps and Stella gets better soon.

Hi there! It is possible that she choke up on the treat just because it was too big or just because she ate it too fast. To be sure, it is always best to feed them treats that are not too big for their size as choking is always possible. I would ensure that they are small enough for her. Dogs that have something stuck in the larynx or the trachea will continue to cough, gag and have difficulty breathing. It sounds to me like you took care of the problem and I wouldn’t be concerned as long as Vito is acting normal.

Small breed dogs can sometimes have an issues with the trachea, and if they drink too quickly it can sometimes cause them to choke and sputter. It is a good idea, however, to schedule a vet check if you haven't already to make sure there isn't a more serious cause behind it. The licking and chewing at air could be a stress response, however if he is choking and gagging while doing this, there may be something else going on that should be checked out by your vet.

She would be too uncomfortable. Maybe something was stuck before but may have cleared by now. Since she is sleeping, just keep an eye on her for now. Poor girl. Unfortunately there are no home remedies for an undetermined underlying cause for a cough. Coughing in itself can be caused by tracheal collapse, underlying heart condition, respiratory infection (kennel cough), etc. In order for you to treat her, we will need to find out the underlying cause. It sounds like she likely may have a kennel cough condition. Tracheal trauma is possible since you mentioned she was fine before trying out a new harness on her; however, most harnesses fit lower on the chest, which don't rub on the throat at all. Give her the rest of the day to see if things improve. You can also offer her a small amount of honey mixed with water, which can help reduce some inflammation in her throat. Continue to give her free access of water and keep her activity level to a minimum. If she is still coughing by tomorrow, then its best to take her in to your vet for a complete physical exam to hopefully narrow down some causes for this cough, so that it can be treated appropriately.
