Why is my dog suddenly very thirsty, peeing a lot, and leaving wet spots?

There are a number of things that can cause a dog to drink more and urinate more. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to know what is causing the problem without doing some testing. Usually the first test will be to have your veterinarian evaluate a urine sample. That may be able to tell us what is going on, but if it doesn't, then they may also need to check some blood work. Coco may have a urinary tract infection causing the increased drinking and urination. You can get a sample and check to see if the urine is clear yellow. If it is greenish or blood tinged then he should have an exam and urinalysis at your veterinarian. He may need antibiotics to clear up the bacterial infection. They may want to check his kidney function and palpate his prostate also. As long as he's eating and has plenty of water you can wait a few days to see if this improves. It sounds like he may have some trouble holding into his bladder, and that could be caused by him drinking a lot of water, or he could have a medical issue such as a UTI or bladder stones. Even though it’s only happening at night, Fiddle still might have a urinary tract infection or a problem causing increased thirst that leads to increased urination (infections, kidney disease and diabetes would be a few of these diseases). I would recommend seeing your vet - they would probably recommend checking a urine sample to start.

My first concern with going that much would be a urinary tract infection. Kidney disease and diabetes can also cause increased urination. There may have been a recent dog walking the same path and Birdie may have been marking. Without seeing her it’s hard to say. To be sure I recommend taking Birdie to a vet for an exam and to test her urine for problems. You could also continue to monitor her. If she continues to urinate frequently at home, you notice a change in her appetite, drinking habits, or lethargy then I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Birdie!

He will pee constantly if he’s drinking that much. He may also be losing sodium in the urine causing him to want to lick sweaty people to get additional salt. That much drinking and urine are not normal and could be a sign of kidney disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and blood work to check his kidney function and check for diabetes which also could cause these signs. Early diagnosis of a medical problem will help get him the proper treatment if needed and could prevent progesssion of the disease. If Luger is going in for his neuter today, I would certainly have them check some blood work and a urine sample at that time to make sure that there isn't anything medical going on. It sounds like they were not aware of how much water he was drinking at the shelter, so the fact that he is not house broken may be due in part to a medical condition that is causing him to drink more water and you will need to correct the medical condition before being able to successfully house train him.
