Why is my dog peeing so much on walks, even without drinking more?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 32 lbs

Last night on our regular walk my dog Peed 8 times. She typically pees once during that walk. This morning we went on a longer walk and it was the same behavior of lots of peeing. Historically, even during a long walk, she would typically only pee once. She has not been drinking more liquid, in fact she never drinks much at all. I make her dog food and include supplements and Omega oil’s. Yesterday I poured the remainder of the Omega oil on her food. Could that be the cause?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not think the omegas have anything to do with the urinating. My first concern with going that much would be a urinary tract infection. Kidney disease and diabetes can also cause increased urination. There may have been a recent dog walking the same path and Birdie may have been marking. Without seeing her it’s hard to say. To be sure I recommend taking Birdie to a vet for an exam and to test her urine for problems. You could also continue to monitor her. If she continues to urinate frequently at home, you notice a change in her appetite, drinking habits, or lethargy then I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Birdie!

Excessive urinations could be caused by a urinary tract infection, kidney disease, diabetes, etc. You should schedule an appointment with your vet for bloodwork and a urinalysis. It could just be a behavioral issue but she should have a work-up to rule out potential causes.

For that reason, I would encourage you to go to your veterinarian as this could be something treatable and very manageable. It's possible that while Kiwi is going more frequently, the volume has not increased. In either case, this is a concerning symptom that should be checked out by your vet. Possible issues such as metabolic illnesses, urinary tract infections, etc can all cause an increase in urination and accidents so having a thorough exam done is best.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Nina. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Increases in thirst and urination can indicate an underlying disease. For example, diabetes can cause these symptoms. The veterinarian will examine her and likely collect blood and urine. Based on these results, treatment can be started if necessary. Why is my dog drinking and peeing constantly with clear urine?

He will pee constantly if he’s drinking that much. He may also be losing sodium in the urine causing him to want to lick sweaty people to get additional salt. That much drinking and urine are not normal and could be a sign of kidney disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and blood work to check his kidney function and check for diabetes which also could cause these signs. Early diagnosis of a medical problem will help get him the proper treatment if needed and could prevent progesssion of the disease. Hello, and thanks for your question. If Bell is only doing this behavior when she goes outside to urinate, then it is likely normal marking behavior. However, if it's a change and she's asking to go outside more frequently than usual, or having accidents in the house soon after urinating outside, then that may be a symptom of a urinary tract infection and should see the vet.
