My dog is drinking lots of water, peeing often, and eating less. Why?

Excessive water intake can be seen with conditions such as urinary tract infections, and metabolic conditions such as Cushing's disease to name a few. Given that Chico is also showing signs of being hungry, it is possible that he has something called Cushing's disease which is a metabolic condition which at times requires treatment. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian who can test for that if it makes sense based on further history and physical examination. Good luck!

If Bosco is having increased thirst and urination, then I would start with having your veterinarian check some blood work and urine to see if they can figure out that is causing the increased thirst and urination. I recommend you check in with your veterinarian so that they can check the urine for the possibility of an infection. They may start antibiotics if they are concerned about an infection. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree, that is some very dark urine which indicates he must not be drinking enough. You need to increase his water intake. The best way to do that is to add some chicken or beef broth to his food; use the low sodium kind. The added salt (even in the low sodium variety) should encourage him to drink more. If this dark urine continues for more than a few days you should take him to your vet for an exam and urine test.

Ted is adorable! Thank you for posting a picture. Giving an excessive number of treats can certainly cause an upset stomach, but shouldn't cause an increase in water intake (unless it was salty human food), so the cause of Ted's increase in water intake might be unrelated to the treats. A urinary tract infection is only one of a large number of possible reasons that a dog will drink more water than normal. But the first step in evaluating an increase in water intake is to check a urine sample. That will check for a number of things including a urinary tract infection. Depending on those results, your veterinarian may recommend additional testing or may be able to make a diagnosis. So, I would recommend having Ted evaluated by your veterinarian. They will need to evaluate a urine sample, so they may recommend having you collect one at home or may recommend that he not urinate for a few hours before coming in for his appointment so they can collect a urine sample there. This could indicate that something is wrong with Roxy. Her urine is so yellow likely because she is not drinking much water. I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would have her blood tested and her urine as well. There are a number of things that can cause a dog to drink more and urinate more. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to know what is causing the problem without doing some testing. Usually the first test will be to have your veterinarian evaluate a urine sample. That may be able to tell us what is going on, but if it doesn't, then they may also need to check some blood work.
