My dog is suddenly shaking, coughing, and growling. What's happening?

It's possible that this could have been a type of a seizure, but there are other conditions and behaviors that could mimic a seizure. If this continues, or Bruno is otherwise acting abnormal, then it's best to have him examined by a vet as soon as possible. If Bruno is otherwise acting normal, then there is no need to rush him to the vet, but it would be good to have a vet evaluate him sometime in the near future, because the vet may detect an underlying problem (i.e. heart or neurologic disease) causing this convulsing. It would also be very helpful for you to record a video of him doing the convulsing behavior if you happen to see it again. I hope that helps and all is well with Bruno.

Hi there. So sorry that Kage is having this issue. Based on your description it sounds like seizure activity or a pain response (orthopedic pain like arthritis). I suggest you video an episode if it happens again so you can show your vet. Did the vet just examine him or was any testing done? If no blood testing was done that should be the next step. If the blood testing is normal then your vet can prescribe an anti-seizure medication or pain medication (depending on what they think after seeing the video) that will likely help. Hope this helps. The way you described it, it sounds like he was reverse sneezing. Look up some YouTube videos on "dog reverse sneezing" and see if you think it was that. If so, it is nothing to be concerned with. His other symptoms sound like he may have injured his back or neck and he should be examined by your vet so they can get their hands on him to see if they can find the source of pain.

Handsome fella! Shaking is often a sign of pain or discomfort in dogs. As Joss is a senior boy he may have some arthritis or back pain. There are medications to make him more comfortable that your veterinarian can prescribe after an exam and diagnosis. As far as the coughing and choking goes that can be from a collapsing trachea, lung problems or early heart disease. That may or may not be serious but I definitely recommend a veterinary exam to find the specific reason and get Joss the correct treatment. Poor Phiilix ! I am really worried about him. This could be several things like a toxin, seizures, heart problems, liver or kidney disease, and much more. I would have your vet take a look at him as soon as possible. If you have an episode on video this could be helpful for your vet but not a requirement. Your vet may want to do blood work. They will be able to determine the cause and get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better and hopefully stop these weird episodes. I hope this helps!

Hi, sorry to hear Andre is not feeling well. This can be a seizure or a syncopal event, where the heart is not performing how it should be. Syncope is more often seen as fainting or loosing all their energy quickly, then they feel normal again. A seizure can look like shaking, with a post ictal event where he may act like he is off balance and unsure of his surroundings. I suggest taking him to a vet to have his heart checked and blood work to see how his organs are functioning. If possible, video the episode so you can show the vet. He or she may want a neurologist's opinion on this as well. Once you catch it on video, take him and it to the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!.

Based on what you are describing I would be very concerned that Scooter is having seizure-like episodes. I would recommend taking a video of the incident if possible and showing it to your veterinarian.
