Why is my senior dog shaking, spasming, panting, and struggling?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 14 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My 14 yr old black lab mix is having periodic episodes where he shakes and spasms, pants hard and can't stand for 10 + min. During the episode he is not whimpering but does seem stressed and confused. Over the last 3 months I have witnessed this about 4 times. After an episode he then returns to normal behavior. Previous visit to the vet to examine this did not provide any answers. He still eats and goes to the bathroom fine and doesn't seem to have any other health issues.

Hi there. So sorry that Kage is having this issue. Based on your description it sounds like seizure activity or a pain response (orthopedic pain like arthritis). I suggest you video an episode if it happens again so you can show your vet. Did the vet just examine him or was any testing done? If no blood testing was done that should be the next step. If the blood testing is normal then your vet can prescribe an anti-seizure medication or pain medication (depending on what they think after seeing the video) that will likely help.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
