My dog is shaking often and making a weird coughing or choking sound.

I agree that infection is less likely in Chandler if he is to around other animals. At Chandler's age I would be most concerned about heart disease causing his cough. In a Jack Russel terrier a collapsing trachea or even asthma could also be causing these signs. Unfortunately, cancer can also be a cause of coughing in an older dog. I definitely recommend you take Chandler to your veterinarian for an X-ray and examination. If heart disease is present medications can be started to reduce the cough. I would recommend bringing Chelsea back to the veterinarian and getting x-rays of her chest. This will tell you if she has something lung related. There are a lot of different things that can cause a cough. It can be anything from a tracheal collapse to a lung lesion. Without chest x-rays it is hard to say what is causing the cough. Coughing can be due to many different things such as: 1. kennel cough 2. heart disease 3. collapsing trachea 4. foreign body 5. parasites (ie: lung worms, heartworms) 6. bronchitis/asthma 7. cancer 8. pneumonia I think you should get Daddy to your vet for an exam so you can get this figured out. Poor guy. Coughing a small breed older dog can be caused by several things including: underlying heart disease, chronic bronchitis, tracheal collapse, or even neoplasia. The first step here would be to get Dino Diaz seen by your vet and have chest x-rays done to help narrow down the possibilities here. Once we have a proper diagnosis, then proper treatment can be recommended to hopefully reduce or even completely resolve the cough. In most cases though, the cough can only be reduced, which helps the pet become more comfortable and have a better quality of life. Schedule an appt with your vet soon. Tux is a handsome boy. With the shaking, I would be worried about a focal seizure. Try to record the next episode if he has one so the vet can see. Also, if you see if again, try to determine his level of responsiveness while it is going on. With a seizure, they are typically non responsive or dazed. Dogs can also develop weird behaviors as well so this is not excluded. I would also recommend to take him into the vet for bloodwork to make sure his liver is normal as seizures can results with liver disease. I hope this helps!

I know you are worried so you really need to get him to a vet for an exam. I think you are right to be worried. Here are some possibilities for his symptoms: * collapsing trachea * heart disease (like heart failure) * heartworm disease * kennel cough * asthma * lung worms There are many others but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Things I would rule out would be heartworm disease, collapsing trachea, heart disease, laryngeal paralysis, tracheobronchitis (kennel cough), parasites, chronic bronchitis, or cancer. Unfortunately, none of these things can be diagnosed and treated without testing- exam, blood work and xrays. Since cost is a concern, I would continue to monitor his quality of life. If he is eating, drinking, and not losing weight his quality of life is good. If he stops eating or drinking, starts vomiting, can't sleep, or is losing weight, his quality of life is poor.
