Dog had a stroke, can't stand. How to help them pee or poop?

It sounds like your dog may have meningitis or encephalitis or had a brain bleed. You will have to express his bladder twice a day to get the urine out and hopefully his anal ring muscles are relaxed so the intestines are pushing out feces. He will need to drink water to keep from dehydrating and hopefully he eats his food. The fact that his right side is paralyzed is a sign that the left side of the brain is where this initially started. It will take a few days for improvement to be obvious. You should consult with your veterinarian again tomorrow, because of the inability to urinate and defecate. This will complicate matters. Please contact your vets office to discuss her progress as without a full history of all of her injuries and wounds, how much she ate or drank when she was in the clinic and how well she had been toileting before she went home it is impossible to guess whether this is expected or if it is a set back from how well she had been doing. Tehy may need to adjust her pain medications, or assist her either with enemas or manual expression of the bladder which would require an extended hospital stay until she is more stable or they may be able to demnostrate some handling and exercises to help support her balance and encourage her to toilet normally

He may have fractures, internal injuries and bleeding, and may even have neurological issues from being hit by the car. If you mean that he is unable to urinate, that is a medical emergency, and requires immediate veterinary care. Your vet will assess him and recommend appropriate treatment, which will likely include pain medication, imaging and possibly surgical repair. I'm wondering if sling walking or propping him up using towels might be an option depending on the type of surgery that he had - if he's able to posture in a semi-normal position he might be more willing to urinate. This is an emergency situation as Cooper needs to urinate and empty the bladder as soon as possible, otherwise it will get over-distended and become flaccid permanently. A dog should not go more than 18-24 hours without urinating as that can result in severe discomfort and even metabolic imbalances. This requires a visit to a veterinarian as soon as possible so that they can consider passing a urinary catheter and possibly recommending other pain control medications as it is not normal or expected to not be able to walk to urinate at this point. It does sound like a back injury. If he is getting worse (meaning he started out stumbling and then was dragging his limbs then stopped urinating), the best solution for him is surgery. Make sure you talk to the vet about medications and the biggest importance is REST! This means in a cage only- no walking, carry outside to potty and carry back in.
