My injured dog won't pee or poop after accident. What should I do?

I'm so sorry to hear Sasha got into an accident. Most likely she isn't urinating due to the pain/discomfort in her leg and the difficulty in getting in "position" with the splint. If she isn't on any pain medications, I would recommend contacting her veterinarian to discuss what pain control options she may have. Depending on which leg it is, you can also use a towel as a sling underneath her to help support her weight and allow her to urinate. There is the possibility depending on the location/extent of her injuries that the nerves that control her bladder were damaged in the accident or the bladder itself damaged. If she continues to not be able to urinate, she would need to be evaluated to ensure her bladder is intact and her nerve control is nornal. Good luck!

Poor Lily! I am really concerned that she hasn’t peed or pooped since the accident. She could have ruptured her bladder or have something preventing her from pooping. I would have your vet take a look at her especially since she is pregnant. Your vet will be able to see if her bladder is intact and hopefully see why she isn’t pooping. She may also be dehydrated and need some fluids. Your vet will also be able to do bloodwork if needed. If your vet has an ultrasound, they should be able to check on the puppies as well to ensure their heartbeats are strong since she is 4 weeks along. I hope this helps!

I'm wondering if sling walking or propping him up using towels might be an option depending on the type of surgery that he had - if he's able to posture in a semi-normal position he might be more willing to urinate. If you mean that he is unable to urinate, that is a medical emergency, and requires immediate veterinary care. If so, anesthesia can slow down her gastrointestinal tract. It is normal not to defecate for a day or two afterwards. Otherwise, it may be painful for her to hold the position to defecate. It sounds like your dog may have meningitis or encephalitis or had a brain bleed. You will have to express his bladder twice a day to get the urine out and hopefully his anal ring muscles are relaxed so the intestines are pushing out feces. He will need to drink water to keep from dehydrating and hopefully he eats his food. The fact that his right side is paralyzed is a sign that the left side of the brain is where this initially started. It will take a few days for improvement to be obvious. You should consult with your veterinarian again tomorrow, because of the inability to urinate and defecate. This will complicate matters. Hi there and thanks for posting. Oh dear, I am so sorry to hear Kitty was lost for a few days. That had to be very stressful. Also, I am sorry to hear she came back with a few medical issues. It is hard to say what exactly is going on with Kitty without examining Kitty first, but from your description it seems like Kitty may have injured her pelvis, spine, or rear limbs that may be causing her to not urinate properly or defecate as it may be painful for her or she has some neurological deficits disabling her to have control of her bladder. She could also have a urinary tract infection causing the straining to urinate as well. I would recommend visiting a veterinarian clinic soon so she can get some x-rays and a neurological exam in addition to a regular physical exam.
