My dog won't urinate after ACL surgery. What should I do to help?

I'm wondering if sling walking or propping him up using towels might be an option depending on the type of surgery that he had - if he's able to posture in a semi-normal position he might be more willing to urinate. I recommend to call Presley’s veterinarian. Only urinating once is unusual and may cause a urinary tract infection. It could be related to pain from the surgery or related to not being able to posture to urinate. Her veterinarian may recommend adjusting the pain medication. Using a towel like a sling can help her support her weight which may make her feel more comfortable so she will go potty. Ask her veterinarian about this option as well. Continue offering her water as it is important to keep her drinking. Some bruising and swelling can be normal and again, let the veterinarian know. He should be rechecked by your vet or at the local veterinary ER today. He may be painful or still feeling the aftereffects of general anesthesia. This can last as long as 72 hours. If his bladder is full, the doctors can insert a urinary catheter if necessary to empty it. Medications can be administered or dispensed to alleviate pain which may make him comfortable. Supportive care can also be administered. SQ fluids may rehydrate him and perk him up.

Please contact your vets office to discuss her progress as without a full history of all of her injuries and wounds, how much she ate or drank when she was in the clinic and how well she had been toileting before she went home it is impossible to guess whether this is expected or if it is a set back from how well she had been doing. Tehy may need to adjust her pain medications, or assist her either with enemas or manual expression of the bladder which would require an extended hospital stay until she is more stable or they may be able to demnostrate some handling and exercises to help support her balance and encourage her to toilet normally

I'm so sorry to hear Sasha got into an accident. Most likely she isn't urinating due to the pain/discomfort in her leg and the difficulty in getting in "position" with the splint. If she isn't on any pain medications, I would recommend contacting her veterinarian to discuss what pain control options she may have. Depending on which leg it is, you can also use a towel as a sling underneath her to help support her weight and allow her to urinate. There is the possibility depending on the location/extent of her injuries that the nerves that control her bladder were damaged in the accident or the bladder itself damaged. If she continues to not be able to urinate, she would need to be evaluated to ensure her bladder is intact and her nerve control is nornal. Good luck!

I am so sorry to hear Kira is having difficulties after her surgery. It is understandable that she is having troubles standing, and hopefully I can provide you with some options for helping her. Movement and physical therapy after these types of procedures is important. But it must be don't correctly. Encouraging Kira to stand and move around on her own will be difficult at first but she will get stronger as the days pass. Rather than trying to lift her with your hands, try passing a towel or bed sheet under her belly, just in front of her back legs, to make a sling. Then you can lift this-it will provide more support for Kira and hopefully be more manageable with your injured arm. Try and find someone (a neighbor or friend) who can come help if you need extra assistance. Ensuring that Kira takes her post-Surgery pain medications as prescribe is very important too. If she is very painful she will be more reluctant to move around. Once Kira is moving around normally, has recovered from her surgery and is given the 'all clear' to return to normal activity by your veterinarian then it would be a good idea to try and achieve some weight loss for her. Being overweight not only puts extra strain on her joints (especially the one that has just been repaired) but it also puts her at much higher risk of rupturing the ligament in her other leg. Please do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian if you feel Kira is not recovering appropriately. Ask them too about any recommended physical therapy routines you can do for her to help improve her mobility. You may be able to find a certified canine rehabilitation specialist in your area too. If you are certain that Gus has not urinated in three days, you need to take him to a veterinarian right away. If he has a blockage in his urethra, this is a life threatening emergency. If it is an obstruction in his urethra, unfortunately there is just not a way for you to fix that or make it better at home, and the consequences of waiting --to see how he does in the hopes that it is something else--the consequences are too great. Most often a urethral obstruction is caused by a bladder stone that slips into the urethra causing an obstruction when it hits the os penis (the bone inside of the dog's penis). I'ms sorry I don't have a better solution for you. You need to take him to a vet NOW. If you don't have a veterinary emergency hospital near you, call your regular vet even if they are closed.
