Why is my dachshund struggling to pee and move his back legs?

I'm so sorry to hear Hannu is having back issues. With dachshunds, a bulging disc in the spinal cord is a very likely possibility, and the best treatment option to give the best chance for a return to normal function is surgery to remove the protruding disc material. There is also the chance that there could be an inflammatory process or trauma going on. Ideally, he would be evaluated by a veterinary neurologist to determine the underlying cause and what treatment options are available to him. You can discuss with your regular veterinarian medical management such as cage rest and steroids/antiinflammatories, but time is critical in these cases and I would have a plan decided for him as soon as possible. Hello again. As I mentioned before Hannu needs rest. This means in a cage where he cannot move around much. You will need to express his bladder about 4-6 times per day. I hope the vet gave you medicine, so continue to give that as prescribed. If he improves it will take weeks to months to get better. His best chance for quicker recovery is surgery. This will put extra pressure on the back legs, and that could be why the pain is worse when she poops and pees. Dachshunds are also prone to back problems, and that would also cause increased pain when peeing or pooping. If she isn't getting better, I would recommend taking her back into the vet and having an x-ray done on her spine just to make sure there isn't a problem there as well. Once they have a disc issue, Dachshunds are more prone to future issues. I would recommend confinement again, and a quick vet checkup. Often pain medications and rest will help them heal. Veterinary acupuncture is also a great alternative therapy to increase speed of healing and hind end weakness or paralysis.

I'm afraid this is an extremely serious problem - Dachshunds are very prone to herniated discs in their spine which can cause rear leg paralysis, so I would be very concerned that this could be the problem. He could also have been injured somehow, or could have a neurologic disease of some kind causing him to not be able to use his legs. Bleeding from the rectum coukd be due to internal injuries or a serious illness of some kind. This sounds like a serious, life-threatening problem, so I would recommend taking your dog to an emergency vet immediately. He/she can do x-rays, blood work, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what can be done to treat it.

These signs are due to a spinal cord injury most likely due to intervertebral disk extrusion in the thoracolumbar tract. The presence of paresthesia (due to nervous system lesion) is causing tingling sensations on the penis and a sort of itch (that is why is persistently licking it).
