Why is my bulldog's other leg stiff with curled toes after surgery?

Hello. I am sorry to hear that Dutchess isn't feeling well. If her leg won't bend and she is keeping it straight, it could be that she has injured her leg (torn her cruciate ligament) or could have a luxating patella. I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian, as a leg muscle cramp would not continue or cause the clinical signs you are describing. Good luck with her.

I would recommend taking her back to the vet right away to be checked out. She could have laid on the leg in the funny way during surgery and have some temporary nerve damage or could have pain from an infection related to the IV that is making her not want to walk on it. In any case, that's not normal and her vet can help figure out what needs to occur next.

After surgical orthopedic procedures there can often be a loss of range of motion due to the healing process. This can be combated through physical therapy. I would highly recommend seeking the guidance of a rehabilitation veterinarian. They can create a therapy regimen for Pep and hopefully help her gain some mobility.

Koby is a cutie! Ideally he just sprained his forelimb/only has a soft tissue injury and will respond well to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (recent blood work showing normal liver values is usually recommended before prescribing NSAIDs such as carprofen/Rimadyl) for a few days along with activity restriction for a week. This conservative therapy may be chosen as long as the limb does not appear swollen, acutely painful, etc. on physical exam/palpation. Re-x raying that limb would be ideal to determine if there has been migration of the pins/a new fracture etc. but could potentially wait if he is putting weight on the limb/it does not appear swollen/ and he responds well to the pain medication. As he has pins in his limb, he will be more prone to arthritis as the years go by and would likely benefit from being on a joint supplement such as VetriScience Mobility Flex or Vetriflex for life. The most common condition causing this symptom in this breed is called patelar luxation which is basically displacement of the knee cap. you will need to get it checked by your vet to assess the severity of the condition, it might require surgery depending on the level of pain and lameness.

One of the most common reasons we will see a dog limp after they get up from resting is arthrits in a joint. Since Maggie is 9 years old, that is certainly a possibility. A complete cruciate tear will result in an unstable joint and will have lameness that occurs at a walk or run, but a partial cruciate tear is not unstable and can result in a lameness that is worse after resting. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Maggie to see what they find on exam, then see what their recommendation is for treatment. A joint supplement may be enough for Maggie or she may need a prescription medication. It really depends on her examination.
