Why is my 7-month-old French bulldog limping after elbow surgery?

Our French bulldog broke his elbow when he was 3months old, he had surgery and got two screws put it. He is now going on 7months old and his leg seems to be giving him trouble this week, he woke up one morning and was limping and couldn't put much pressure on it but it improved itself within a few hours and he was perfect again. Now again tonight - 3 days later he is starting to limp on it again, it was perfect in between the 3days. What could be the issue? Thank you

Koby is a cutie! Ideally he just sprained his forelimb/only has a soft tissue injury and will respond well to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (recent blood work showing normal liver values is usually recommended before prescribing NSAIDs such as carprofen/Rimadyl) for a few days along with activity restriction for a week. This conservative therapy may be chosen as long as the limb does not appear swollen, acutely painful, etc. on physical exam/palpation. Re-x raying that limb would be ideal to determine if there has been migration of the pins/a new fracture etc. but could potentially wait if he is putting weight on the limb/it does not appear swollen/ and he responds well to the pain medication. As he has pins in his limb, he will be more prone to arthritis as the years go by and would likely benefit from being on a joint supplement such as VetriScience Mobility Flex or Vetriflex for life. It is certainly possible that Florence has an injury to her knee or hip. It is very common for dogs to limp at a walk (or hold the leg up when standing), but put it down while running. It does not mean that the leg is not painful. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Florence to see if they can determine the source of the problem. Certainly they may recommend x-rays as well. If there is a soft tissue injury, they will be able to prescribe appropriate pain medication and treatment. And if there is something more serious, you certainly want to deal with it before it becomes worse. In the meantime, I would recommend keeping her as quiet as possible and not allowing her to run since that might injure the leg more. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Is my puppy's limping normal 3 weeks after leg fracture surgery?

Poor girl. : ( It sounds like she is tweaking it a bit when she tries to do extrenuous exercise, which is expected, especially since she still has hardware in place in the leg. Her muscles also can grow tired quicker and become inflamed, which can cause some limping after increased movement. This sounds pretty normal at this stage in the healing process. However, if you are noticing any excessive swelling around the area, drainage or signs of infection, then she should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, follow-up your vet as scheduled to check on things and hopefully the leg is healing well via the post surgery x-rays that they will take. I hope that Olly's leg heals well. My French bulldog puppy limps and drags a leg. Is it hip dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia can only be positively diagnosed with x-rays. There are certain indicators that can be noted on a physical exam, but they can only be considered supportive of the actual radiographic diagnosis. I would have his leg looked at and examined for fractures, evidence of soft tissue injuries, or as you have mentioned, evidence of hip imperfections. Based on the nature of the injury, the solution to the problem maybe something as simple as rest or medical therapy, or as complex as surgical procedures. Hope this helps.

Why does my French Bulldog puppy need pins removed from his leg?

If it was his distal tibia that was fractured and the pins are near the growth plate, the pins can sometimes affect the way the bone grows in a young dog and lead to limb deformities with time. If there is concern for this on the x-ray it could be why your vet wants to remove the pins. Sometimes hardware can also break or become infected and require removal. Since your vet knows the details of the case you may want to bring up your concerns with them and they may be able to better explain the reasoning.

Is surgery necessary for my 4-month-old bulldog's fractured elbow?

Hi, it is impossible to keep an elbow still enough to allow healing of the fracture.. being a joint there is always the tendency to move. So yes I agree that surgery would be the way forward. Hope Rubble makes a speedy recovery.!

My French Bulldog struggles to walk, leg shakes, vet says normal. Help!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If the blood results and x-rays were normal, it could be a problem with a nerve or with the spinal cord. It may be worth to rest Nacho for a few days (only short walks on a leash) and use painkillers. If after 3-4 days this treatment does not help, you should consider more advanced imaging of the spine, for example contrast x-ray, CT or MRI scan. French Bulldogs do suffer from spinal problems, like slipped disc, vertebral instability, vertebral body maldevelopment and more. Plane x-ray is not useful in diagnosis most of these problems, therefore the only sensible way to go is advance imaging.

My dog fell and is limping for days. Is her elbow injury serious?

Considering she fell 5 days ago and she is still limping, I would recommend a veterinary check up as medications are likely to be the only way to decrease inflammation and relieve pain/discomfort and speed up recovery. Complete rest is essential as well and even though no fractures are visible, severe ligament or tendon injury can be serious enough to cause the presenting signs.
