Why is my dog dazed, won't lay down, and has leg spasms after surgery?

It sounds like she is in pain and needs some physical therapy to help her learn to walk again. She has probably lost muscle from being in a cage so long. I recommend having her leg checked so you know where the lameness is from, like her knee, hip or foot, and seeing if there is a treatment for her lameness. They can also get her safe pain medication. She may walk better once the pain is under control. Use a harness and leash so you can assist her walking and get her up for many short walks during the day. It's possible she has injured her back. many times there will not be any signs on a physical exam until the injury happens. Certainly an injury to the joints of the leg are also possible. I recommend to try to get her examined as soon as you can. A back injury can become chronic and serious in nature (just like humans). Be up front with the doctor about your cost concerns. Until you have her examined, she needs exercise restriction so NO running, jumping, going for walks, stairs or getting on the furniture. I would call and ask for pain medications or for additional pain medications. She should be on an anti-inflammatory (rimadyl, previcox and deramax) at a minimum. They can add tramadol and/or gabapentin. If you are worried and are not happy with how she is acting then definitely take her somewhere to be evaluated. The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. No, this isn't normal. I see that Gretchen in a Dachshund, and they can commonly have issues with their spine that come on suddenly. I would consider this a medical emergency, and she needs to see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I'm so sorry to hear about Kamie. It certainly sounds like she is in a lot of pain. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her again. Sometimes we are not able to determine the full extent of their injuries right after an accident, but are able to make a better diagnosis after a day or 2. Your veterinarian may also need to prescribe or adjust her pain medication. I would not recommend giving her any over the counter pain medication without speaking with your veterinarian since some will increase the risk of bleeding and may interact with pain medication that your veterinarian may prescribe. Hello. It can take up to 24 hours for all the sedation to work through her system, so she is very likely still a bit under the influence. I would like for you to look at her gums, the tissue just above her canine teeth, to see if she looks nice & pink. If her color is pale, greyish or bluish, get her back to your vet immediately. You can certainly lay with her, & if she is just on a cold floor, I would try to get her on something warmer. The pain medication is just indicated for once a day, so you can not give her any more just yet, nor can you give any aspirin, Tylenol or Alleve. Your veterinarian may have something else on hand if it looks like she needs more, but most patients are feeling much, much better by the next day.
