My dog's leg is stiff and won't bend after surgery. Is this normal?

Poor girl. : ( It sounds like she is tweaking it a bit when she tries to do extrenuous exercise, which is expected, especially since she still has hardware in place in the leg. Her muscles also can grow tired quicker and become inflamed, which can cause some limping after increased movement. This sounds pretty normal at this stage in the healing process. However, if you are noticing any excessive swelling around the area, drainage or signs of infection, then she should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, follow-up your vet as scheduled to check on things and hopefully the leg is healing well via the post surgery x-rays that they will take. I hope that Olly's leg heals well. Poor Saif! Good mobility and function would normally be expected by 4-6weeks after surgery. I recommend a full check up by the operating vet and possibly recommendations for or referral to physical therapy to try and rebuild strength as long as no focus of pain or breakdown is discovered during his check up

I could see how the leg could be stiff if he lay on it all night. That happens to me sometimes if I lay on one arm all night while sleeping. It's a good idea to have him checked out by a vet on Monday. Best of luck.

I would recommend taking her back to the vet right away to be checked out. She could have laid on the leg in the funny way during surgery and have some temporary nerve damage or could have pain from an infection related to the IV that is making her not want to walk on it. In any case, that's not normal and her vet can help figure out what needs to occur next.

The dog should be kept as quiet as possible for 6-12 weeks to ensure that the bone sets and heals properly. This means no running, jumping, or playing, and the dog should be taken out to toilet on a lead only. Once x-rays are done to confirm that the bone has fully healed, the dog will be allowed to exercise and activity levels must be built back up slowly. Physical therapy and hydrotherapy may be done to help the dog regain it's muscle mass and activity levels.
