My puppy is squinting one eye after a flea bath. Should I worry?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Soap is very irritating to dog's eyes and can cause superficial damage to the cornea. This is painful, and causes dogs to squint their eye and produce more tears. I recommend trying to flush the eye with eye wash - you can purchase from a pharmacy - 2-3 times per day. If Dobby is still squinting his eye in 16-24 hours, he should be seen by a veterinarian for an eye exam. Depending on the severity of injury, a cone collar may be recommended as well as other topical eye medications. If Dobby's eye seems to improve in the next day, he may be OK. I hope this is helpful! I'd have Sergeant checked out by a vet right way. A flea bath shouldn't cause these pustules, it may be he has a skin infection called puppy pyoderma. The weeping goopy eyes wouldn't be caused by a flea bath unless it got into his eyes. It could be he has an eye infection. Please take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Frontline is safe for puppies that are 6 months of age. You did not clarify if she used Frontline spray or Frontline spot on. If she used Frontline spray and it could have gotten in Fluffy's eyes, then Fluffy needs to see a vet immediately. The spray can cause damage to the eyes and is very painful. If it was Frontline spot on, then I would not expect that to be a problem, but I would be concerned if Fluffy could have gotten soap in his eyes from the bath which is also very irritating and painful and should be treated by a veterinarian in case he has developed corneal ulcerations. It sounds like your pet Daisy has a very common situation here which is a chemical burn or scratch on her cornea (surface of her eye). This is common after being groomed because shampoo or condition can get on the eye and isn't washed off properly or promptly. Poor girl. I would recommend taking her to your local vet as soon as you can to get her eye examined, tested and treated. Coco will likely be just fine as long as this was a flea shampoo intended for dogs, and none of it got into his eyes. I recommend drying him gently with a towel and ensuring he stays warm enough. If he stops eating or drinking, or begins showing any unusual clinical signs such as wobbliness, trembling, or seizures, or he starts squinting his eyes, he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Based on what you are describing, it definitely sounds like Princess sustained some trauma to her eye from the soap getting into it. If she is squinting her eye, she is definitely painful and should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Soap can cause superficial corneal ulcers to occur, which can rapidly worsen without treatment, especially if she is continuing to scratch at her eye and traumatize it further. Corneal ulcers, if left untreated, can become deeper and deeper to the point of causing the eye itself to rupture - if this occurs, the eye must be removed. If you have an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) at home, I recommend putting that her Princess right away to keep her from scratching at it. Please have Princess seen by your vet or an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible to start treating her eye. Do NOT give any pain medications that are intended for humans to Princess, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Princess!

Poor pup! Flea shampoo can be extremely irritating and may even cause chemical burns or corneal ulcers in the eye due to the chemicals in it. You can try to help by rinsing his eye thoroughly with plain saline eye wash, or plain warm water if you don't have any eye wash handy. After that, if the eye continues to look red and irritated, he really needs to be seen by a vet for treatment - if he does have a burn or corneal ulcer, he will need prescription eye drops to treat the problem.
