Puppy got Dawn soap in eye. Red, swollen, squinting. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 9 days old | 4 lbs

Tonight I washed my puppy with dawn dish soap, and I have done so many times before, but when I was pouring it he moved and got it directly in his eye. We have rinsed it a few times, but it is slightly swollen. The bottom lid is red but his cornea doesn't look too irritated. He is playing normally but squints and he is tearing up some. Is this to be expected?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Soap is very irritating to dog's eyes and can cause superficial damage to the cornea. This is painful, and causes dogs to squint their eye and produce more tears. I recommend trying to flush the eye with eye wash - you can purchase from a pharmacy - 2-3 times per day. If Dobby is still squinting his eye in 16-24 hours, he should be seen by a veterinarian for an eye exam. Depending on the severity of injury, a cone collar may be recommended as well as other topical eye medications. If Dobby's eye seems to improve in the next day, he may be OK. I hope this is helpful! Please consider purchasing a puppy-safe soap that won't be so irritating to Dobby in the future!

Soap can be very irritating to the eye if it isn't washed out well.

Flushing the eye with sterile water or saline will help. Here is what I would recommend or something similar you can find at your local pet supplies store.

Poor girl. Unfortunately it sounds like Coco has a chemical burn on her cornea. YOu will have to take her in to your vet to get this treated. After a quick eye exam and stain test the vet should be able to idenitfy the ulcer and then prescribe her eye antibiotic ointment to resolve this. Please take her in soon to help the eye heal quickly and not risk deepening of the ulcer, which will further injure the eye.
Until you can get her in, its best to wipe the outside gunk that accumulates with a salt water solution to help prevent irriation around the eyes. But please schedule her an appt as soon as possible.

I would gently flush our your dog's eyes with cool water for a couple of minutes if she will allow you to do this. Monitor her eye, and if it's still swollen around the eye in the morning, or the eye itself has become red, then I would take her into the vet to have her eye examined.

Based on what you are describing, it definitely sounds like Princess sustained some trauma to her eye from the soap getting into it. If she is squinting her eye, she is definitely painful and should be seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Soap can cause superficial corneal ulcers to occur, which can rapidly worsen without treatment, especially if she is continuing to scratch at her eye and traumatize it further. Corneal ulcers, if left untreated, can become deeper and deeper to the point of causing the eye itself to rupture - if this occurs, the eye must be removed. If you have an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) at home, I recommend putting that her Princess right away to keep her from scratching at it. Please have Princess seen by your vet or an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible to start treating her eye. Do NOT give any pain medications that are intended for humans to Princess, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Princess!

My dog's eye is red after bath soap. Will it resolve naturally?

Aww poor guy! It will likely resolve on its own over the next 24 hours. Rinse his eye thoroughly with tap water to make sure residual soap is gone. If it’s not resolved in 24 hours or if it starts to seem like it’s bothering him, take him to your vet. It’s possible there is enough irritation to cause an ulcer on his cornea. (Though not likely.) My dog's eyes are watery two days after shampoo. Is it serious?

If Bruno is favoring his eyes by squinting or pawing at them then yes I would be concerned that they may be irritated. The soap could have caused some damage to the cornea or simply just irritated the eye. If you took him to a vet, they could stain his eyes to ensure whether or not there was an ulcer on the eyes and whether he will need antibiotics drops. You could use over the counter artificial tears but I just worry that if there is actual damage to the eyes that they may not heal with just that. I hope he starts to feel better soon.

My puppy is squinting one eye after a flea bath. Should I worry?

It could also be due to an eye injury of some sort like a corneal injury for instance or a corneal ulcer. Dish soap in dog's eye, red and closed. Is it safe to wait for vet?

Detergents like Palmolive can cause irritation to the eye or could even cause a chemical burn to the surface of the cornea. I definitely think you should see your veterinarian later in the day - they might put a drop of stain in her eye and may prescribe eye drops. While it would be ideal to see your veterinarian right away I doubt there will be any serious complications from waiting a few hours. You could try flushing her eye with saline solution again and you should put an e-collar on her if she begins rubbing her eye.

My dog's eye is red and swollen from shampoo. What should I do?

Ouch, poor Sam! You did the right thing by rinsing his eye immediately. The redness and swelling of his eye could be a result of irritation from the shampoo. In some cases of irritation, the cornea can also become scratched, particularly if Sam is scratching his face or rubbing it on the ground. A vet should examine Sam's eyes and will likely need to perform a fluorescein stain test to determine if any scratches are present. If there are no scratches, Sam may need a prescription for a steroid based eye medication to decrease the inflammation in his eye. However, if a scratch is present, steroids in the eye are not safe and a different anti-inflammatory medication may be needed. Make sure Sam is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent him from irritating his eye further. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

My puppy got shampoo in eye, third eyelid showing. What should I do?

The protrusion of the third eyelid is common when the eye is in pain. I'm a bit worried that the saltwater may have caused this if the salt content was too high. Saline is a salt water solution, but is balanced in a certain way. I only recommend flushing the eye with saline (can find at the pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section). His eye should return to normal within 24 hours if it was not badly damaged by the soap or salt water. If his eye still looks abnormal after two days, then it would be best to have a vet examine him.
