Why do dogs sniff people's private areas? How can I stop it?

Dogs will often sniff each other's rears in an attempt to gain valuable (to them) information about each other. Your dog may be doing this to you out of curiosity of what you're like! If he is being too rude it is best to simply get up and stop giving him attention. He'll quickly learn the behavior doesn't get him anywhere, while sitting nicely or performing other behaviors gets him attention!

If Buddy has had any changes in his urination habits, or if he is licking at himself a lot, take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a skin infection in the area, a urinary tract problem, or any other issue that may be making the other dogs especially interested in his penis. If Buddy gets a clean bill of health, though, unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do to regulate the behavior of other dogs. Keep Buddy distracted with a ball or other toy, and just keep moving. It might mean that the Chihuahua has an unusual or interesting odor in this area, which could be due to an anal gland infection, vaginal infection, or active heat cycle. It could also just be your dog's way of being friendly, although this kind of interaction is often seen as "rude" by other dogs.

Many dogs are interested in the genital areas of other dogs - there are lots of interesting smells there, regardless of spay/neuter status :) No need for concern unless she's doing it so much that it's annoying to the other dog, in which case I would redirect her to some other activity or keep her on-leash so that she can't constantly bother him.

Without a complete history, it is near impossible to determine what may have happened to make Booboo respond in this way. It could have been a past traumatic experience or it may simply be old age changes. Since you know he is uncomfortable, try to prevent other dogs from approaching him in this manner in the future.

This sounds like very normal dog behavior. If you really must change it then you can do a quick, gentle but firm correction on her leash and use a consistent term such as "this way" or "leave it". It is also important to give her a time in which this free behavior is okay. You can unleash her and say "go play" for example.

It could be that, for some reason, the back of your knees smell really good to Shadow. Dogs seem to enjoy the scent of their owners. and that may be why he is doing that to you and your mother. It's not something I would have any concerns about :-)
